Agreed. Which is why I do not drink the Lagavulin particularly often, because it's so damn expensive. But it's the only bottle I have in the house at the moment.

Laphroaig is better than Glenmorangie, just as easy to come by, just as good as Lagavulin, and cheaper than both.

Jack isn't that good.

It's not bad. It's just not that good. If you've had bad whiskey and good whiskey, you know what I'm talking about. It's better than bad and falls well short of good. It's medium good.

Indeed, I'd put Laphroaig 10 up against Lagavulin any day, and their 15 and 18... It's no contest, I think.

I was at a Scottish function where a guy brought the family stash. It was 50 years old. He was sharing it in tiny glasses about a 1/3 of a shot.

It was smooth. It was like drinking from Venus herself. When I say it was the nectar of the gods, I would like anyone to provide proof otherwise.

I've been told there are very few Scottish produces that sell world wide who haven't been bought out in the last few decades.

Also the 50 year old stuff tends to turn out very good or very bad. There is no middle ground once you get above 10 years so they price goes up as they throw out more and more. Apparently most casks of 50 year old aren't any good at all.

Normally, I'm a scotch drinker, but the article was about rye whiskey...don't drink it often, unless mixed with Coke. But if you're going to drink rye, go to the professionals...

Oh, and also I grew up in Windsor, Ontario, home of Canadian Club distillers - man, driving past that place was like holding a piss-soaked rag to your nose.

It STANK.

To this day I hate the smell/taste of corn-based liquor. Of course, if I grew up next to the rye distiller above, I'd probably feel the same way.

American whiskey isn't supposed to taste Christmasy. It's supposed to steady your hand so you can shoot farkers who talk like that.

I drank an expensive 12 year old 'The Macallan' and a cheap Dewars the other night and they both a) tasted like poison and b) contributed equally to a delightfully manic drunk. I only got the The Macallan because someone else bought a round and I figured I'd waste his money.

Hard to disagree, although Jack is a good mixer.

I've also tried Jack Single Barrel (slightly better than the original) and Gentleman Jack (decent for drinking straight).

Gotta say, I'm definitely a bourbon man anyhow; I like the taste of rye, but bourbon's sweetness just appeals to me more. Scotch is fine, but I haven't tasted too much to have any opinion on it besides, "It's too damn expensive."

Actually, I've only had the black cherry. They soak the bourbon in vats of real black cherries. Amen.

Makes a lovely bourbon sour but to make a real good sour you have to pour the Bar-Tenders dry mix in real slowly.

I was given a bottle of Macallan Fine & Rare Collection 1939 whiskey by a rich-(ish) uncle for graduation once. I drank it all in one night. The shiat was good though, barely any hangover and made the diet coke taste like regular coke.

Started doing whisky nights with a handful of friends a few years back. Everyone brings a bottle, the host provides food and sleeping arrangements if necessary (usually is), and keeps whatever isn't drunk. All started with a bottle of The Balvenie Doublewood I gave to a buddy who's dad had done whisky tastings in the past. We keep charts on who brought what (to avoid duplication), our impressions and ratings. My most recent favorite is Muirhead's Silver Seal 21 Year.
