The Avengers sets a new record even while slipping to #2, behind the ridiculously under-performing Men in Black III. I'm not saying it's aliens, but...it's aliens

MIB 3 looks O.K. Liked the first one, 2nd one was very forgettable. Did anyone see it? How was it?

And I'm *yawn* shocked The Hills Have Eyes Chernobyl Diaries didn't do well. Let's hope the Amazing Spiderman suffers the same fate so Marvel can get its baby back.

Sony will just re-boot again if it fails... Marvel will get it back from Sony when they can pry it from its cold dead hands... that or Disney pays through the nose to get it back.

If only there was some character in the Marvel Universe who could smash down the walls of Sony to rescue Spidey....

I saw Moonrise Kingdom. Just a beautiful movie, my favorite Wes Anderson film by far. Pretty much pitch perfect, and I didn't really expect to like it. I'd be shocked if its not in my top ten of the year.

Well, hopefully the continued success of the Avengers will convince Disney it needs to unleash the goon squad on Sony. Of course, I don't know how air tight that contract is so I'll just stick my fingers in my ears and la-la-la-la-la. I can't really tell you how bad I would like to see a Marvel Spiderman or X-men now that Marvel Studios has found its legs.

It was OK. It wasn't bad, but it was not great. Of the 3 movies in the drive-in triple feature (MIB, Avengers, Dark Shadows) it got third place in my car.

I dunno why you think it sucked. I thought MiB 3 was at least as good as the first MiB. Josh Brolin's K is spot-on. You'd swear he was Tommy Lee Jones in a younger body. And I really enjoyed the character development we got to see in K, and, to a lesser extent, J. The way the script took little things and tied them all together at the end was really cool. Even things you thought were plot holes early on were addressed.

Anyone who loved the first one is sure to love this one, IMHO. I know I did. Sure, it wasn't Avengers, but what is?

I saw it yesterday with my son in tow. I'd rate it at least as good as the first one, although in a different way. It has fewer straight-up gags but is more emotionally engaging, and Jones gets to exhibit more emotional range than deadpan grumpiness.

It's not perfect by any means -- you'll see the "surprise twist" coming about 10 minutes before the characters do, and there's a couple of things that will have you going "hey, wait a sec..." before you're out of the car park -- but it was plenty enjoyable, and I'll definitely watch it again when it makes its way to Netflix.

/And yes, let's pretend the second movie never happened, other than to fulfill the rule that every trilogy has one bad part.

I saw MIB 3 in 3-D yesterday.

Nobody goes to movies on Saturday Night any more. They really need to renovate the movie-going experience. I don't mind having my choice of lots of seats though, but a funny movie is funnier in a crowd of people enjoying it. You get positive reinforcement from other people whether you want to or not. The same is true when nobody is laughing at something you find really funny. It kills the buzz even though you know they are just not getting something because of ignorance or stupidity.

I think James Brolin did an excellent job playing 29-year-old, 1969 K. The plot was more cohesive than MIB 2 and I liked the 5-dimensional alien who helps save the Earth--he was a cross between Mork the Dork from Ork and Nathan Lane slash Matthew Broderick from The Producers musical.

A great personal secret is revealed, closure is obtained, and all in all it wasn't a bad movie if you didn't bring too many expectations and prejudices to the theatre with you.

3-D is a bit of a rip price-wise. It doesn't add that much to the movie-viewing experience. It is not in-the-round enough, although they have managed to eliminate the painful cardboard glasses and the headaches. Even if you wear eyeglasses you should be able to watch a 3-d movie fairly comfortably now. It still looks like the old-timey 3-d photos that look like a cut-out diarama. Some of the pop-out thingies were hovering about two rows ahead of me. I should probably have sat further back for a better effect. It was nice at times, though. Panoramic landscapes and buildings work fairly well, as do jiggly things. I really see no reason to see the 3-d movie if I can see the 2-d movie for less and why would anybody buy a 3-d TV? A bigger screen and better sound are plenty of extras for now.

Speaking of jiggly things, it must have been cake because jam don't shake like that.

Somebody has to make the great B-movies of tomorrow, or else we are stuck with the 1950s and early 1960s. Just enjoy, no need to whine about the corn. Corn is America's greatest contribution to world culture and nutrition. I wish I could afford to buy some at the theatre.

Going at 11 AM on a Saturday, and then using it as an excuse to spend the afternoon in downtown - $6/ticket.

Going Saturday night - $16.50/ticket.

/And in completely unrelated news, I went to see The Dictator today. It's not great, it's not terrible, funniest moment was actually the Ted trailer before it. Between the Thunder song and the White Trash names, I was sent into a hacking fit by my laughter.

I think I've only seen the trailer for MiB3 about four or five times over the last month while it seemed the trailer for Chernobyl Diaries was constantly shown during every ad break. The horror genre needs some serious revitalizing and I think the best way to do that is by revisiting the past. I'm talking old school Giallo/gore type stuff for the gorehounds and Hammer/Carpenter type atmosphere for the ones looking for a good scare. It seems the only time we get gore is through shiatty torture porn while other horror is just the same unscary crap over and over. Ditch the CGI, ditch the "found footage", and ditch the digital cameras. I know there's the underground stuff, but most of that is either crap or overly low budget. Some of the all time classics were low budget, but they didn't LOOK that way.

/Er, rant over. Point was, Chernobyl Diaries looks like ass and is just another handful of dirt on the horror genre.
//Heard MiB3 was pretty good. Need to see it.

That's a rather bizarre meaning of "spluttered out". We get it. You don't like it. Huge numbers of people around the world clearly do like it.

Critical acclaim and huge box office. I always knew Joss Whedon was great.

And my prediction? Avatar II will come nowhere near Avatar's box office. Avatar II and III (if it actually gets made) will be Matrix II and III again.

Didn't say it would. Just pointing out that "spluttered out" suggests a flop, not a movie that has broken all sorts of records and far exceeded everyone's predictions, and will almost certainly be no 3 WW in a few days, and that's before it even opens in Japan. That is not "spluttered out". That is "slowing down after huge success".

Also, sputtering out IS slowing down after a huge success. You are confusing "sputtering out" with "sputtering out of the gate".

Cameron has a rep for being a pain to work with, having a huge temper and going over budget and schedule. Whedon has a rep for being great to work with and finishing on time and on budget.

So I'd say this is a good thing. Cameron has made some great movies, though he does have a rep for stealing stuff. Ask Harlan Ellison or anyone who has seen Pocahontas.
