Its an interesting question, and it goes to the major failing of Romney's campaign team: a terrible communications strategy (last week it was "let's insult teachers!", to pick a recent example).

I think Romney's handlers actually think that since Trump has a somewhat popular television show, having Romney appear with him will somehow make him appear to be more of a "regular person" or relatable or likeable in some way. Its a stupid notion, but its the only "logic" I can think of behind putting your candidate anywhere near that birther nutjob.
