Too bad for Michael Dorn, but even if he were cast as a human, his distinctive voice would impact the immersion in the movie.

It always bothered me that Worf was not in all the Star Trek movies. All of them. Even digitally mixed into the original series movies.

So long as they get back to the core of the show - murdering aliens and raping their womens.

To be fair, I think his grandpappy was in one of the original movies, as either the prosecutor or defending lawyer in Undiscovered Country. Pretty sure that was Michael Dorn in that role...

Not really. His voice would carry certain implications for the character but what I really want to see is him as Tom Morello in a biopic.

Worf in Bulls on Parade.

I can't be the only one to want this...

Maybe the script didn't call for an overweight, geriatric Klingon who wore out his welcome years ago starring in unwatchable TNG movies.

Correct.

Regardless, FTA, Michael doesn't sound too broken up about it. As George Takei has said "Michael's off flying one of his planes". Sounds like he realized the fleeting nature of the business, and invested well. Good for him. JJ's doing a good job, and this could have been a distraction.

I'm of two minds when it comes to product placement. On the one hand, having recognizable brands lends verisimilitude to a movie, on the other hand I don't like shelling out money to be marketed to. Maybe the phone went too far, but using the brand names of drinks in the bar scene seemed appropriate.

Worf got ok around the end, when he grew his hair out and started killing people when he could. But no, most of them couldnt act, and those that could you still didnt like, except for Stewart. Charisma was a rare commodity in TNG and especially in the shows it spawned. By the time of Enterprise the characters were pretty repellent. At least Abrams seems to understand if you like a character, you wont be to worried about their acting. As evidence of this I give you the most popular Star Trek captain "acting":

I guess that means Nokia survived both the Eugenics Wars AND World War 3? They must have switched to making things other than consumer electronics for the next couple hundred years.

The Wrath of Khan
is a terribly plotted and edited film, with hammy dialogue and all sorts of bizarre plotholes. But it's one of the best Star Trek films because you get to kick back and watch Shatner and Monteblan have a scenery chewing contest with each other. But I would go so far as to say that the acting was actually quite good. Sure, it was played very broadly, but again- hammy dialogue. But it wasn't until I had scene the film many times that I realized that Kirk and Khan never had a single scene together.

That's actually a pretty amazing bit of acting.

I never understood comments like this. I mean ya sure there are people who are terrible actors like a musician guest staring on a tv show or something, but can you provide an example of the main cast of TNG not being good actors? Are you just confusing that with not liking the characters, or poorly written dialogue? IMO all the main cast delivered their lines well, and conveyed the proper emotion when the script called for it. Can you show an example for instance of lets say Beverly Crusher doing a poor job of saying her lines, or acting in a way that the show called for?

When he is given good material - he shines. When he is given shiat material he phones it home. TNG was shiat writing through every episode.

Eh, Tim Russ has a pretty distinctive voice, and he's played three different characters throughout Trek.

Sorry, had to fix that.

I'd say it had more to do with the director knowing the weakness of Shatner and the editing. In the right role with the right director even John Wayne could be convincing... sort of. Montalban likely needed little help, he was a pretty good actor. Hell, even Checkov ended up doing a decent job in that movie, and his acting was often immersion killing bad.

Well, Gene Roddenberry oversaw the hiring of the cast members for TNG. A hack writer hiring hack actors which fit his muddled "philosophy" of the perfection of homo sapiens.

And yes, I know pissing on that paticular tin god puts me square in the crosshairs of trekker/trekkie/basement dweller/nerd rage. Especially the 37-year-old virgins.

Having said that, I do confess to having a DVD set of Alternate Realities Collective. But that's it.

TNG, with the exception of a few episodes, has aged worse than TOS. It's painful to watch these days.

I'd agree with you on season 1 and 2, but season 3+ were great for the most part and still hold up well. For a show that was producing 26 episodes a year, at the very start of CGI becoming more common place, its production values are quite remarkable.

Wha? I loved TNG. I'm not ragging on them, I just used a familiar line from the show to tell off the poster I quoted.

\I hated Tasha Yar, though, right up until she died. Denise Crosby made a fantastic Romulan, and was good as Yar in the later time travel type episodes.

Mostly agreed. I can still remember oohing and aahing that you could see someone walking on the bridge during the opening credits when the ship flew by. No one had ever seen that on TV before.

And yeah the first 2 seasons are just pathetic. The show did get better eventually and even pretty good from time to time, but as a sci-fi series in 2012, it would be laughed off the airwaves for its hokey pretend-serious-deep plotlines and inability for the characters to remember what happened last week even though it changed all their lives, again.

The film is more than 200 years in the future, it is doubtful that those brands will even be around. My tea comes from twinings because the east india company no longer exists.

I think most of the hate for Yar exists only because she was only there for the terrible first season. I think almost any other character would be thought of just as badly if they were killed off in that episode. Worf was an equally useless character the first year. It wasn't until they fleshed out his background in later season that he became interesting.

Two possibilities/scenarios about her...
She quit because she got bored of saying "hailing frequencies open, sir" which was the official reason she left...
She got canned because of the Playboy shoot.

I had a friend that claimed he had a personal conversation with Rick Berman (ew. I wonder if he gargled afterward) and he said it was the latter.
He also said that when Gene Roddenberry died, the Paramount executives were in his assistants' offices within the hour.... "Gene is dead. You have an hour to pack and leave."
