I've seen those in airports. Ahhh, duty free, where it's only "play money".

/at least in my mind

Has the author or anyone actually interested in this story not been in an airport in the past few years?

Or a Macy's - who has had the machines in their stores for at least 5 years.

I've seen these machines even in the train stations (Best Buy machines) where you can buy low end electronics, but why would you? The prices are marked up high.

Watch out though, a lot of malls have those stupid claw grabber games too, and you don't want to mix up the machines and end up with 1,800 chances to win.

Scott Di Valerio, chief financial officer of Coinstar, is inside of the Star Studio Photobooth, one of the company's new test concepts for automated retail. Coinstar's expansion into new areas of automated retail also is part of an effort to ease investor concerns.

I wonder if I should map out the options available on Coinstar. When you see companies trying to "ease investor concerns" it means they are either about to throw billions into a black hole or make it so big you wish you'd bought at $60.

Hmm.... teen girls "can pose as rock stars, fashion models or world travelers, then decorate their photos, share them via email or Facebook and get prints on sticker paper."

What could possibly go wrong?

If these examples are Coinstar's best ideas, I'd say the company is in trouble.

The only reason I can think of is if you're rich and you forgot to bring something on your trip.

I did actually see a "live fishing bait' vending machine at a gas station once. It was a modified soda machine, but you could buy all kinds of worms from it.

Coinstar coin-counting machines now charge 9.8%! Last time I checked, years ago, it was "only" 7.5%. What a racket.

No fee if you use their "shop online, pay cash" deal. Wal Mart's getting that market. Amazon, Overstock, even JC Penney are already in.

Those of you that have worked on credit card machines know exactly what that is. I wonder how many of these were coded incorrectly.

You cannot get "designer coffee" from a vending machine, Subby, nor any coffee that may fairly be described as potable.

If there were one of those within, say, 500 miles of here I'd consider making a trip just for the novelty of it.

I've bought several items from those machines at Macy's and the prices were the same as "street prices" anywhere (Apple stuff is rarely discounted anyway).

I haven't worked on credit card machines, but I'm willing to bet that's a testing card number.

They had a big vending machine here that was the size of a small house that you could get gallons of milk from, big boxes of detergent, produce. It was real cool. I think it was only here a year.

You would be correct. It is the most commonly used test number. One of my previous jobs was programming credit card machines (personal fav was the Omni 3750). It's kind of scary knowing that most credit card companies will use the same credit card numbers and just update the exp dates over the years. No limits on them since they never actually 'clear' the purchase. But, there is the chance that a system or the coding will not be clean when it gets sent to a customer which means those cards are still valid.

Same thing goes for ecomm. Every once in a while you can find a site that will accept that card number without an issue.

I'd just like to know how they have, nearly ten machines in LA and San Antonio? Did they install an incomplete machine?

This story is so old, we were calling it old when it would get posted to Digg every month. That's how old it is.
