... That should be "wrong-lange missers"

Well, Adrian, it's not going exactly well. There's a water buffalo jackknifed up there. It's not a very pretty picture, there's horns everywhere. I dunno what to say, we're gonna maybe drop in a little napalm there, try to cook him down, have a little barbecue.

Seriously.

Best Korea ranks as the 3rd worst country in the world for deforestation. I'm not sure how much of that is due to burning the wood for heat and how much of it is trees dying because people are eating the bark.

I think Kim Jung-Un's official title is Dear Successor. Address him properly, or face the wrath of fully armed and operational long range missiles.
images.alarabiya.net

I'm sure the guys in charge of propaganda are busy rewriting Kim Jung-Un's biography to come up with stories of his childhood as a simple peasant, just like they did with his father. New postcards will quickly follow.

/The mountain behind Dear Leader int he Best Korea postcard is Mt. Paekto, where he was supposedly born.
//Most people agree that he was born in Siberia while his father was in exile.

Why not both?

Step 1. Eat bark.
Step 2. use dead tree as firewood.

Yes, when you're starving to death, you get very ... innovative, frugal, very adept at "killing two birds with a single stone," so to speak. I'm not sure if there's a good single word in English for that combination of desperation, practicality, and frugality that such conditions generate. There are some books, such as Nothing to Envy, that go into some details as to how the Koreans have dealt with poverty and starvation.

(You could also see examples of this in London during the Blitz, or victory gardens, or the USA during the Great Depression. It's universal.)

--- begin CSS time

I taught school for a while in a village in Nepal, just before the Maoist uprising of the mid-1990s. At the time Nepal was ranked as one of the poorest countries in the world, though this was a bit misleading. (Because the vast majority of Nepalis were farmers, there was very little currency but also virtually no starvation, and Nepal was actually much better off than many other countries).

I was amazed at how little trash I generated each week. It was almost nothing but paper. Think of how much of the trash you generate each week is empty containers or wrappers for something you bought. I had none of that. Even so, when I would go to burn my trash (there wasn't really any other way to dispose of it), people would stop me and ask permission to go through it all to see if they could find anything of value. By the time they were done there was very little left to burn.

I bought food in the market by weight (every merchant had a balance scale and set of weights), and the lentils or other item I bought would be wrapped in reused paper. One time I noticed that my lentils were wrapped in the homework assignment I had just graded and handed back to a student the day before.

---end CSS break

And that leads me back to a point a made before: that North Korea is truly and deeply farked. On a grand scale of global problems, being ranked as one of the poorest countries in the world and suffering a Maoist uprising is really somewhere in the middle. Canada and the USA are at the "too much goat cheese in the salad" end of the scale. North Korea is at the "fighting to death over corn husks" end.

That bit about corn husks was not hyperbole, by the way. Link didn't work right.

Though, it was corn canes, not cork husks, apparently.

You may have to google it if I can't get the link to work this time.
