| itsdan "I cherish the memories of a question my grandson asked me the other day when he said, 'Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?' Grandpa said 'No... but I served in a company of heroes.'" Every time I reach the end of Band of Brothers and he speaks the words above I cry a bit, and it's not from the dust. I think I'm going to go find my DVDs. |
||
| whyRpeoplesostupid itsdan If you can watch part 2 of the last DVD in that series and not cry, there's something wrong with you |
||
| SilentStrider It kind of amazes me that I grew up so near to such a heroic man, and yet, untill Band of Brothers, I'd never really heard of him. Still, it was an honor to be at his public memorial last year. Very moving. |
||
| Nadie_AZ I had an old friend who loved history. He was 50+ years older than me and was a tank commander in Germany in the early 50s. We'd sit down, have a vodka tonic (or scotch- he loved scotch) and watch a documentary or movie and then chat a while on it all. He was extremely knowledgeable and a joy to talk history with. He passed away in April. I was a pall bearer. I went over to help clean up his apartment. Somebody set aside his BoB box set and gave it to me. You better believe I am not letting that one go. whyRpeoplesostupid: itsdan If you can watch part 2 of the last DVD in that series and not cry, there's something wrong with you 'Bastogne' gets me every time. |

| cretinbob Meh, I'll be more impressed when the erect a statue of Nick Rivers. |

A reluctant hero, Winters, who passed away last year at 92, deflected the laurels onto his men. |

| thamike I know what I'm watching tonight. |

BOB is on SPIKE TV right now! |
||
| GooberMcFly I have this sneaking suspicion that he would be horrified at the idea of a statue in his honor alone. |

Well, I know what I'm doing today. /loads up Band of Brothers DVDs |

I don't remember Dick Winters from the game, but I'm pretty sure Commander Shepard wouldn't have someone else's statue in his ship. |

GooberMcFly: I have this sneaking suspicion that he would be horrified at the idea of a statue in his honor alone. Still, a picture of the statue wouldn't hurt TFA. |

On the main road to Sainte Marie-du-Mont in Normandy, the steeple of the 11th-century church - once a shield for enemy snipers - rises high above the village. The confessional and the glass case that encases a statue of the Virgin bear bullet holes, remnants of the fierce fighting 68 years ago. Virgin bear? Sounds like someone didn't proofread what they dictated. |

Awesome. Now that *I* post without proofreading, I get it. The statue bears bullet holes. oy. |
||
| Nofun McKilljoy
i imagine its because of the fame we received from the tv series. |

Kumana Wanalaia: Awesome. Now that *I* post without proofreading, I get it. The statue bears bullet holes. oy. I read out as virgin bear also. Actually pictured a bear in a glass case, but wondered how they knew it was a virgin. I'm my defense, I had just woken up. |

Call me when Gonorrhea gets a statue. /Winters is a beast |

The confessional and the glass case that encases a statue of the Virgin bear bullet holes, remnants of the fierce fighting 68 years ago. Virgin bear? Sounds like someone didn't proofread what they dictated. Actually, it is grammatically correct in that the sentence has a compound subject, "confessional" and "glass case," (though I would imagine it is the statue with the bullet holes, not the case) so it takes a plural form of the verb. In this case "bear" rather than "bears." |

"Breaking Point" is mine. Watching Wild Bill run out into an artillery barrage with absolutely no regard for his own life to get to his friend Sgt. Toye, was, for me, the epitome of the comraderie those men had for each other. |

cretinbob: Meh, I'll be more impressed when the erect a statue of Nick Rivers. Link! I could not remember the name, I had to look it up. Dick Winters however, is a name I will never forget. Like many, I had never heard of him before BOB, paid $60.00 for my BOB set. Could be the best $60.00 I ever spent, I always watch the entire movie from start to finish. |

Great man. Proud to serve in 4/101, Currahee! |
||
| wee Here's a pic of one of the holes: ![]() Here's Wild Bill and Babe Heffron outside the church (well, closer to city hall) laying a wreath on a memorial: ![]() Here's Babe inside the church. He was crying. |

| grokca Dick Winters? Sounds like he gave those NAZI's the cold rod. |

Winters, and enjoyed reading his book, my favorite is the book about Wild Bill and Babe (Brothers In Battle, Best Of Friends). Robyn Post, the author, did a remarkable job of presenting it like a first-person narrative, complete with the language and grammar that Bill and Babe used. You could tell who was talking just by how they said it. /RIP, and Godspeed, Richard Winters. //As well as the rest of the Currahee gang. |

Nothing like giving a statue to a guy only famous because of a TV show. Fine attempt Funny thing about WWII Vets - they get famous all the time, but since they really aren't attention whores they fade from time to time. He was famous before the movie when they wrote a book about Charlie company. he was famous during the war in a sense for his outstanding leadership and service record. In my hometown (in Canada) we have a Victoria cross winner. Recently his name appeared in a movie and suddenly some local people (mostly younger citizens) started clamoring that our city should honour him - what the hell kind of city wouldn't honour a hero like that. Upon further review there is a children's park named in his honour, a street named in his honour, our local legion hall and a scholarship program ....it had all been there since the 1950's - they just hadn't paid attention until a movie did. |

I am in the middle of watching BoB for the first time so I'm getting a kick... This article goes well in juxtaposition to the one that shall not be named about that MSNBC guy over on the politics tab. ![]() This sort of threw an entire portion of the movie off for me though. Why the fark did they cast him? I looked it up and it was during his SNL years. If it was prior, I thought there might be some excuse, but no. Nothing like being totally engrossed in an incredibly serious and moving war scene and this farking guy pops up for no reason. I heard all three of his lines in Neil Young's voice. |

Outrageous Muff: Nothing like giving a statue to a guy only famous because of a TV show. As opposed to a person who served half their term in a part-time service they were handed on a silver platter before going AWOL so they could drink, party and hang out with their fathers friends who were running for office, loudly tooting their own horn about their "military experience" during their own political campaigns. Then going on to start a war against a nation that didn't even attack us. |

Smeggy Smurf: troll somewhere else. Preferably at the bottom of a manure pit I'm sorry, did the realization of that fact make you upset? Col. Winters is a true American hero, but none of you would have a clue about who he was without a TV show. |

I love that movie, but I can't unsee it now. |

I heard all three of his lines in Neil Young's voice. Perhaps it's because I don't watch SNL, however, I do know vaguely of the actor, and never realized that driver was Jimmy Fallon until your post. For me, the worst casting decision of the series was Ross as Captain Sobel. [desmond.imageshack.us image 450x253] Yes, that threw me off as well. He sort of grew into the role though, and did a good job. I was able to quickly forget "Friends" while watching him. Fallon on the other hand...and for such a minor role (unless he appears again later, he only had 3 lines, none of which were of consequence, so why even cast him)... Who knows, maybe the casting person was drunk. |
||
| SharkTrager
Nexzus: For me, the worst casting decision of the series was Ross as Captain Sobel. He was perfect in the role. By the second episode you hated him, and when he reappears later on you STILL hate him. |
