How do you do millions of dollars in damage to a landfill ???? Isn't a landfill where you dispose of worthless trash ???? |

| NutWrench Shredded tires are commonly used as a filter on the bottom of landfills and are promoted by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as a way to prevent chemicals from leaking into the ground, Fruin said. He said the city has lined its landfill cells with the substance for a decade - a decision Rocca said he expects to be revisited once the flames die. We never learn. from wikipedia: Tire fires, where tires are stored, dumped or processed, exist in two forms: as fast-burning events, leading to almost immediate loss of control, and as slow-burning pyrolysis which can continue for over a decade. They are noted for being difficult to extinguish. Such fires produce a lot of smoke, which often carries toxic chemicals from the breakdown of rubber compounds while burning. A single tire contains about the equivalent of 7.5 liters (two U.S. gallons) of oil.[citation needed] |

The wind and heat also makes for a challenging work environment, with temperatures reaching up to 1,200 degrees, Fruin said. Yes but what was the humidity, cuz that's what makes it really feel hot out. |

Hi, I'm here for the 'hot load' jokes. |

The liner is where the "damage" comes from. It has been reported locally to be around $7 million to replace it. The smoke smells like burning trash all across the area. Glad I don't live close by. |

Around here, we can't have an incinerator, because of the eco concerns, but if the landfill catches fire, we'll just let it burn. No scrubbers, no filtration, just flat out let it burn. But, never a regulated, smaller than any landfill ever, incinerator. Oh, hell no, can't have that. |

Maybe that was what you were thinking of? |

NutWrench: We never learn well, *WE* do. You can drive all over Vermont and rarely ever smell a PWTF. (poor white trash fire) But you go over to PA and the entire state smells like a hillbilly cook out where the main dish is a clorox bottle. |
