9beers: What an idiot for going public with this. Just try not declaring it now. Why? He doesn't have to report it. It was a gift. Just because they handed it to him at his place of business does not mean it was for services rendered. It is not reasonable to assume a exchange of $5000 cash with the instruction that the payee purchase a vehicle is a tip. Tips are considered wages and are not subject to stipulations. The payer and the payee both agreed that the money was for the purchase of a vehicle. It is clearly a gift. If he's really worried about it he can have the payers draft a letter stating that it is a gift for the purchase of a vehicle. If they were willing to give the five large I bet they'd be willing to put together a one sentence letter and sign it. |

max_pooper: Why? He doesn't have to report it. It was a gift. It was given to him by a customer, while he was working. It's a tip, no matter how people try to spin it. |
