Admittedly I say this being a fat non-athlete individual myself, but Serena needs to lose some weight. She's definitely bigger than she was a couple of years ago and now moves slower and is less agile (although a shait-load of unforced errors didn't help). Either that or that foot injury she had while back is causing her more problems that she's letting on.

It's the twinkies, isn't it? Even before I knew it was the twinkies, I knew it was the twinkies.

Hmm, looks eerily similar to my headline from yesterday. I normally don't complain about these things, but common man.

And today Venus lost easily to Radawanska.

I declare Williams' era officially over. They're now at an age where part-time dedication plus name alone won't cut it.

To be fair to Venus, she has been pretty consistent in terms of dedication. It's Serena that continuously finds other side activities to do. Serena should have at least 4 more titles then she has.

That 111th-ranked player was ranked in the top twenty a couple of years ago. She had an assortment of injuries and then her fiancée died, all of which led to her collapse in the rankings. Clay is her best surface, and Serena's worst (by far). Serena had built up expectations by winning a couple of warmup tournaments on blue and green clay, but red clay (as at the French Open) is a different beast. Plus, Razzano--a veteran player with an unusual game--had the partisan crowd behind her.

Short version: this was never going to be a cakewalk, regardless of the ranking disparity.

I think I saw Serena Williams last week. Well, it was either her or Shannon Sharpe.

Also, the match was crazy. I had it on in the background, and when the tiebreak got to 4-1 or so, I killed it, thinking 'there's no way'. An hour later I turn it on and not only has the Frenchwoman won the tiebreak (!), but she's also up 5-0 in the 3rd, despite some kind of injury to her calf that the umpire won't stop docking her points for crying out in pain from.

/Madness, I tell you

Yeah, it had all sorts of drama. The tennis was kind of sloppy, but the emotional rollercoaster made it compelling.

From what I understand, Razzano had leg cramps. And the whole docking-of-points thing was something of a joke, considering the bellows that so many of the top women let out on a regular basis. I understand the hindrance rule, but its implementation is a joke, and mostly subjective. Both players were irritated at Asderaki for her work in that match.

Doesn't she have a connective tissue disease (Sjogren's, IIRC)? If she had a flare, that would explain her poor performance.

That's Venus, actually. Serena had blood clots and a mysterious foot injury that has about a hundred origin stories.
