its the former really. Poland has been trying to change the way the camps are refered for years because they feel (probably correctly) that phrasing it "Polish death camps" implies that Poland was running them or at the least an active collaborator in their creation/administration. This situation allows them to get a lot of publicity for their campaign to change that.

That whole "Polish cavalry charged tanks!" crap was actually Nazi propaganda that the allies then also leaped upon to explain why Germany did so well early on in the war; "No, of course the Nazi war machine isn't unstoppable! it's just that everyone they've fought so far was really dumb!".

The polish had cavalry, as did many other armies, but they dismounted to fight. The horses were just a means of transportation.

This has been going on for a pretty long time. So you can be anti-Obama and claim that he should have known that this was an issue, or you can be pro-Obama and claim that it's actually a pretty common thing to say that is understood as describing 'nazi death camps located in Poland' rather than 'death camps run by the Polish government'.

Or you can be a reasonable person and understand that this is an example of people getting their panties in a wad over phrasing rather than substance.

1) Gerald Ford, in a debate with Carter, claimed that Poland would not consider themselves under Communist Russia oppression. In the middle of the Cold War.

2) The Polish people damn well knew what was going on, and many supported it. And I say this as half of my mom side of the family dissapeared during WWII. My Aunt said they were accused of being Jewish, and some were carted off for hiding Jews.
