Too much Vitamin D can be bad for you, reports Ric Romero, bringing last surviving Japanese Imperial soldiers in Papuan jungles up-to-date to the year 1945. Obvious tag too obvious for this one

Can't any extreme levels of a particular vitamin become toxic? Hell, if you drink too much water, it can shut down certain organs, from what I hear.

"Everything in moderation" is clearly not newsworthy.

So we should all try to completely avoid the sun like Gwyneth Paltrow, and then be shocked.. SHOCKED when we develop health problems related to vitamin D deficiency?

The fat soluble vitamins (A, E, D, and K) and a few of the B vitamins (B1, B3, and B6) can all produce hypervitaminosis.

Water soluble ones don't. You could eat a pound of vitamin C without getting hypervitaminosis for example, you'd just piss most of it out. (I don't recommend doing this, as it will cause other problems, but it won't cause hypervitaminosis.)

Trust me Subby, I'd be with you, but have you seen some of these idiots we call parents in America?

They need constant reminders.

Um, since they only assessed blood levels of Vitamin D, couldn't those with too much vitamin D, actually be displaying a symptom rather than a cause? That is to say, they aren't absorbing or utilizing the Vitamin D properly, therefore they're storing it all in the blood, therefore they've got problems, just like the people who aren't getting enough?

Hypervitaminosis? Sounds like a super power!

The My Little Pony Killer: "Everything in moderation" is clearly not newsworthy.

It hasn't been newsworthy for over 2500 years, since the temple at Delphi reportedly had μηδεν ἀγαν inscribed in its stone. There are precious few things that cannot be done either too little or too much without causing some sort of harm. That this is surprising should be surprising, but... Not so much.

One of my favorite sayings for describing when the backyard is overgrown is "It's so thick that there are Japanese soldiers in there that don't know the war is over".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_t oxicity

Basically, the water dilutes the fluids in the body enough that it disrupts the balance in osmotic pressure. This causes liquid to flow into cells, causing them to swell

This includes brain cells (which results in all sorts of nastiness).

// you have to drink gallons of water in one sitting (like at a frat hazing) or run in a marathon without drinking water with electrolytes (you sweat out the minerals and drink purified water and you'll get the same imbalance eventually).

One of the first things you learn in HAZMAT training is that everything is a poison at a certain dosage.

This is not a good Romero headline.

There are plenty of vitamins that are pissed out of your body if you get too much, so vitamin toxicity doesn't happen with every vitamin. And Vitamin D was one of those for which a ceiling hadn't been established, and the idea of actual harm from too much vitamin D didn't have much evidence or solid reasoning to back it up.

So this is actually news. Subby fails.

As a person who was recently told I was Vitamin D deficient and told by a doctor that I couldn't overdo it to get back to normal levels, this is pertinent to my interests. Currently I'm taking 10,000 units a day to get back to normal levels.

/No, they don't prescribe trips to Hawaii. I tried.

I had the same thing a couple of years ago. They gave me an 8 week prescription at that dosage and since then I've just been taking the 1000mg a day over the counter supplement. I moved soon after I got the prescription so I haven't had my blood tested since, but I'm wonder now if I'm going to overdo it by taking daily supplements as my doctor instructed at the time.

Too much Vitamin D. Just gain weight. The fat cells suck out all the Vitamin D from your system.

You know how your diabetic or obese? Check the Vitamin D.

Subby, "too much" of anything, by definition, is bad. This is not what TFA is about. The whole point of the study was to try to get a sense of HOW much is "too" much.

But by all means, regale us all with your superior clinical expertise. But be quick about it, as I'm sure your Nobel prize in medicine is waiting for you.

One of the symptoms of ODing on vitamin A is spontaneous abortion.

I always thought they should make an abortion pill that is just a controlled Vitamin A overdose (not enough to kill an adult) called "Plan A".

/much easier than a push down the stairs
//it's natural and it has vitamins, it's gotta be good

In the same boat. Goddammitsomuch. Probably time to get stabbed and have the blood levels tested again.
