I've seen geek posers whip out their iPhones while wearing the Secret Wars or Domokun t-shirts they bought at Target for $9.99, telling their friends what a great time they're going to have at DragonCon or San Diego ComicCon, as if those are the happening parties of the day.

...what makes you think you can tell the difference between a real geek and a poser just based on that sort of thing? I have a $10 Domokun t-shirt I bought at Target, and I've talked to my friends in public about Blizzcon because talking about interests is what people do. Nice elitism at the end, there. Uh, no and not. I still have my first Atari 2600 and have built all the desktop computers I have ever used and still have my playstations, genesis, Atari Jaguar and have been coding for a living for almost 20 years now and used to be in my high school's dungeon and dragons club and preordered Diablo 3, but I am not a geek. People have come to associated some strange attributes with geek, like technology. But at it's heart, geek is the socially awkward guy that's never in the inner circle because they don't understand that other people may not give a crap about their crap at all and they don't care to stop and check to see if that is the case. Being excited about technology or adept at it's application does not a geek make. Think of the guy in "War Games" that Matthew Broderick took his list of war-dialed numbers to for inspection. Now, think of his co-worker that snatched away the list and had to be reminded when he was acting anti-social. That was your geek. You can try and warp the definition to be somebody cool with gadgets, but that is your legacy.

I know I talked my friends' ears off about my trip to PAX Prime last year. It's not because I'm not a "real geek", but because it was exciting and I had more fun than I can remember. Frankly, I'm glad geek is mainstream-ish now; I'm not such an outcast anymore. I have more opportunities to talk about my latest tech exploits, or pop culture finds, or what not, and because it's not such a shameful thing anymore, people will actually listen to me instead of immediately writing me off. Like the guy said, real geeks love to share, and I've never had the opportunity to share like I do now.

I was geek before geek was cool, and all poser geeks are just doing it to fit it, but geek is who I am, because I don't conform to a standard, even though I'm referencing a clearly defined standard for geek in order to exclude people I don't think are cool, because I'm a non-conformist like all the other true geeks.

In some ways, I see the problem. I've read articles describing how it's great that so many women and adults are "gamers" and show comparison statistics between now and 15 years ago, but neglect to mention the definitions are completely different (playing Farmville was enough to throw you in the 'gamer' category). The problem with that kind of (likely-) innocent conflation is that it can lead to misrepresentation and misunderstanding, and the subsequent discussions are not going to be as effective because the definitions have become too fluid and amorphous.

In this author's case, though, his problem seems to stem more out of a sense of elitism and pretentiousness.
