| vpb Quite a bit, although not anywhere as much as he could have if Republicans and "blue dog" Democrats didn't obstruct everything he does. Does Bolton have any credibility at all left? |

| Nadie_AZ "I think people would agree with Obama that he was left with a mess," Mr Bolton told The Daily Telegraph. "They're not arguing about that, and that's why it doesn't pay for Romney to argue whether it was a big mess or a little mess. Instead, Mr Bolton said, when faced with the prospect of re-electing Mr Obama, "people are saying OK, you inherited a mess, well what have you done to fix it?" Hrm. Speaking with National Journal magazine about Republican Party priorities for the 2008-2010 Congress, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell explained that "the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president." ****** Boehner's plans: Speaking of Boehner, Politico is reporting that House Republicans "have held a series of private discussions to plot their first moves if they win the majority in November - with plans to use spending bills and subpoenas to rein in President Barack Obama and satiate their own ravenous base... The plans presently under discussion include defunding some parts of the new health care law and delaying implementation of others, withholding some of the unspent stimulus funds, and using the oversight power of Republican-led committees to investigate the Obama administration. 'The goal, obviously, would be to make it a one-term presidency,' said a GOP lobbyist briefed on the talks." This is going to be a fine line for the Republicans if they get control: Do they really want to be seen as simply an opposition party, even when in control? Over-obsessing on stopping all things Obama might not play well with indies. ****** George Will: Several possible Supreme Court nominations and the staffing of the regulatory state are among the important reasons conservatives should try to elect whomever the GOP nominates. But conservatives this year should have as their primary goal making sure Republicans wield all the gavels in Congress in 2013. If Republicans do, their committee majorities will serve as fine-mesh filters, removing President Obama's initiatives from the stream of legislation. Then Republicans can concentrate on what should be the essential conservative project of restoring something like constitutional equipoise between the legislative and executive branches. Such a restoration would mean that a reelected Obama, a lame duck at noon on Jan. 20, would have a substantially reduced capacity to do harm. **** After the 2008 election, Republicans openly said their number one goal was to deny Obama a second term regardless of what they had to do and regardless of how their actions might affect the country. They did all they could to sabotage efforts to create a stimulus package large enough to turn the economy around in the hope that they could keep the economy in a recession and unemployment high. They believed that a bad economy would help them defeat Obama in 2012. Mr Bolton, please cite examples where the GOP in the Legislative Branch has worked with the President to help improve things. |

| Ambivalence Aarontology: Vote Republican because the Democrats haven't done enough to fix the mess the Republicans left? Not to mention that the republicans are obstructing any effort to fix because it'll make them look bad if the economy does well under a democratic president. |

Aarontology: Vote Republican because the Democrats haven't done enough to fix the mess the Republicans left? Done in one. That's the actual plank on which they've been basing the last four years. I notice how the media is dragging Bush's cronies - Gonzales, Powell, Bolton, even Jindall - back out to explain how it's all Obama's fault that he hasn't yet fixed the mess they, as part of Bush's administration, created. |

| The Stealth Hippopotamus He's done exactly what Bush would have done, only more so. Bush wanted to give away more drugs, Obama want to give away the hospital. The only difference between Obama and Bush was foreign diplomacy. But that doesn't matter, Democrats do know they arn't running against Bush this time? Right? |

| Diogenes The Stealth Hippopotamus: But that doesn't matter, Democrats do know they arn't running against Bush this time? Right? And you do know that it was Bolton who brought this up? Right? We're responding to that. We can of course extend the discussion of how Romney is proposing we go back to Bush era policies if you'd like. Yes, Obama continued (or was unable to reverse) some of the things Bush did. But let's not get crazy and pretend Romney's platform is anything other than a photocopy of the last Administration's. |

vernonFL: When Bush was in office, John Bolton had a bucket. When Obama was elected, they took his bucket. Bolton couldn't even get confirmed as UN Ambassador with a GOP-controlled Senate; President Bush had to install him via a controversial recess appointment. When the Democrats regained control in 2006 and he would have been up for confirmation again, he realized that there was no chance the new regime was going to approve of his diplomatic approach, which consisted mainly of grazing along the sea bottom, searching and identifying prey with his sensitive vibrissae and clearing the murky bottoms with jets of water and active flipper movements. So he took his own bucket and went home. |

Call me crazy, but... Do you ever get the feeling the GOP is acting this way on purpose so when all is said and done they can claim credit on helping a black guy get elected not once, but twice? |

Not quite the same...Ad hominem When does it become the president's (or candidates) responsibility to accept the status of the nation, when he runs or wins office, and to fix things? I don't think Bush left a great gig for Oba, but then again, when Oba ran for president his promises were made at that time. When does that excuse stop working? I also get that its not completely his fault as the current congress and senate (mostly congress) aren't really helping him. So when does he start focusing on that? When do hard core dems start focusing on thsoe elections instead of bush's legacy? |

Brick-House: Philip Francis Queeg: I'm sure bombing Iran will solve all our country's problems, right Mr. Bolton? No, but it still might be the October suprise he'll be banking on for reelection. Preemptively bombing/invading Iran might be the one thing Obama can do to *prevent* his reelection. I, for one, would not vote for Obama if he did so. And I know a LOT of Democrats who feel the same. |

He was focusing on getting R's to come to the table for the first half of his presidency; that's why the (D) controlled government didn't get jack done (excepting HCR and DADT). The problem is that to get HCR passed he sacrificed good options in an attempt to bring R's to the table they were never going to sit at anyway. |

Fannie and Freddie was created by Democrats for democrats but somehow it's Bush's fault that they farked the housing market and almost caused a financial disaster. It was 15 years in the making when Fannie Mae became the largest corporation in the world and was "backed by the government" so it could sell AAA rated garbage to grandma. They did all they could to sabotage efforts to create a stimulus package large enough to turn the economy around in the hope that they could keep the economy in a recession and unemployment high. They believed that a bad economy would help them defeat Obama in 2012. That is just dumb. 1. Obama got what he wanted 2. The stimulus package was the largest in history 3. The republicans were against it because it sucked. 4. They were obviously right in that analysis. 5. Unemployment is high because the president is downright hostile to business. 6. Unemployment is high because businesses don't know what Obamacare is going to do to their bottom line so they aren't hiring until they find out. 7. The economy is not recovering because Obama's monetary policy has created a giant debt bomb that will go off in a few years that anyone with a hint of financial understanding can see a mile away. 8. The economy is not recovering because the president has added 5 trillion dollars to the antional debt we lost our AAA debt rating. 9. The economy is not recovering because the president has weakened the dollar to the point food prices are the highest in history and gas prices are up 110% from when he took office while the American standard of living is sinking like a stone. This generation will more than likely never live like their parents did. 10. The economy is not recovering because the president is blocking what the market demands. Oil and gas production that could translate into hundreds of thousands of jobs tomorrow while the president wants to continue to throw billions down a black hole that was the "green economy" pipe dream. Republicans oppose the president because his ideas are horrible for the economy. They knew his policies wouldn't work from day 1 and he proved them right. It has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with ideology. But progressives need their excuses when they lose so....keep on that race train! It does your party more harm than good anyway. |
