My dad has a friend that is a professional photographer, and sometimes flies with some really expensive camera equipment. He says that he has a starter pistol that he bought, so when he checks his luggage, he declares a firearm that is in the bag with the camera equipment. He says that as a result, the airline takes extreme care of that bag and makes sure that it is secure.

I flew Delta with a rifle. An AR-180. Federal regulations say that you have to show them that it is unloaded. So I went to do this. Instead of letting me show her it was unloaded, the check in counter lady took the rifle from me, put it to her shoulder, and pointed it at the head of her coworker with a finger on the trigger.

My father (dropping me off) and I turned white (white-er?).

Her coworker just giggled, pushed the barrel away (towards me, of course) and said, "Don't point that at me." Then the lady put it back in the case with the little piece of orange paper. She never did retract the bolt.

I almost just sent it back with my dad.

Yup.

I used to internationally ship multiple pallets of stuff (big huge freakin' boxes) at once every month at my old job and I think only once did a shipment go through a big cargo only operation (I think it was DHL). The rest of the time it was commercial air. More than just your luggage under those seats.

Yea, we know that airlines move and lose a lot of stuff, but I was hoping for more helpful pictues of what a female pole vaulter might look like. Such as Erika Prezerakou...

I'm pretty sure it's FedEx. The primary lobster company has a waiting pool in Memphis, about a mile from the FedEx hub, and packs orders for customers shortly before midnight for the 3am flights.

One time while I was running a 3000 meter race on an indoor track, I came around the corner just as a pole vaulter was going up. He bailed and let go of the pole. With the one end still stuck in the little 'target pit', the other end shifted into my running path where I ran right into it (too focused on running to see it). Hurt like hell, left a nice lil circle on my shoulder.

I hate to see anyone make excuses for incompetent airline workers who would be unemployed except for tax payer bailouts.

The cargo handlers and the bag handlers are the same. Hundreds of workers must have passed by those skis every shift and not a single one of them bothered to do thier job.

Agreed. Fedex stuff like this. For all you know maybe Fedex tossed a pallet on your jet (well maybe not since they own their own planes, but anyway...) and your stuff is down there in the cargo hold. But with third party your stuff is shrink wrapped onto a pallet that has a special team to make sure it gets on your plane. It's not something your gate agent tossed on the oversized cargo belt and forgot to alert the cargo team.
