HOLY HELL! WTF is going on with that site?

Did the Editor insist they use a picture he took of his backyard as the background image?

One of those patients - a 44-year-old Elkton woman in a wheelchair - was shopping in the produce section of the Redner's Warehouse Markets

Good for her. You usually find the fatties in the snack aisle.

Its always the same story..old guy/gal does something stupid with the accelerator, then panics and mashes it to the ground. 2 incidents just like this happened recently close to me, same deal. They're obviously having a hard time with these new-fangled doohickeys..

They really need to require testing of anyone over 65...monthly maybe idk...seriously? Every 2 yrs should be sufficient.

Fortunately by the time I get too senile to drive safely, cars will drive themselves. Why is it that my gas pedal never gets stuck?

While the investigation is continuing, it appears that a mechanical malfunction caused the crash, according to Donnelly.

"The accelerator evidently got stuck while the man was backing up from a parking space, and he couldn't get the car to stop," Donnelly explained.

I do hope that you've got some cast-iron evidence for saying that, Mr Donnelly, as it seems rather premature to be blaming mechanical failure.....for example, even if the accelerator got stuck, it's hard to understand why the driver had depressed the pedal far enough to build up enough speed to cause that much damage. If it had got stuck at normal reversing speed, I'm guessing the car would have caused much less damage.

/unless it's an "under the hood" malfunction I suppose, where the accelerator just randomly opened to the max

Real reason for the crash: this old man was tired of the store power chairs not having enough power. Last words before wreck "It'll fit so I'll use my own".

FTFA "The accelerator evidently got stuck while the man was backing up from a parking space, and he couldn't get the car to stop,"

Then why, in the picture, is all the damage behind the vehicle if he was reversing?

The accelerator gets stuck on full throttle and the brakes stop working at the same time? What are the odds!

mom was a caution behind the wheel when i was a boy, truly horrifying. siblings & i sighed relief knowing there was no way she was going to pass testing at the NJDMV. she's in her 80's.

mom was in a herd of greyhairs awaiting retesting when some helpful a-hole at NJDMV said gosh these old folks shouldn't have to wait, and moved them all through carte blanche, here's your license to kill.

less than 2 weeks later moms in the Saturn all blacked out up on who knows lawn on the way back from buying groceries she didn't need. she's been in a Center since then. can't walk, can't clean up a shiat without assistance, and she still thinks she will be driving again.

one day i'm visiting when the pres of her chapter of a senior citizens group stops in to visit. and that stupid old peckerhead is getting mom all riled up, telling her the cop was wrong, that he can't stop her from driving again. thanks, dooshbag.

FLA, NY & NJ are fine examples of how the USA can put a shiatload of unemployed people to work. there are countless seniors and others that need rides. there is going to be more soon. sooner we start addressing the needs of the aging/retiring Babby Boomer gen the sooner the transition can benefit a large portion of the population. put people to work helping the elderly.

I just looked at the pictures again and did anyone else noticed this guy made a 90 degree turn through the doors? I guess he was trying to use his car as a power chair.

Came here to say this. Every 2 years at 65, and every year at 70, as a condition to keep your driver's license.

Yes, I noticed that, and noticed the wheels were straight. And I noticed the wide arc of debris that wasn't there had he managed such a feat. If the cops fall for his bullshiat story, you can be damn sure the insurance people won't. They don't go in for flights of fancy.

...the car barreled through the doors in reverse, shattering the glass.

The car came to rest against a display of freshly cut flowers.

"It appears that she was struck by debris from the crash. She wasn't struck by the vehicle,"
said Lt. Matthew Donnelly, a spokesman for the Elkton Police Department.

Mechanical failure, my ass. When it is determined that the cause was not mechanical, he should be charged the same way a 20-year-old would be. If you can no longer tell the gas from the brake, get off the road.

This is why there should be mandatory retesting for all drivers every year. As a commercially licensed driver, it's time we cleaned up the behavior of the amateurs on the road.
