This will be good. He looted and felt justified for doing so by his stint at Auschwitz? This tablet belongs in a museum. |

||
| ZAZ Here is the appellate division decision: http://www.nycourts.gov/reporter/3dse ries/2012/2012_04165.htm. The son told the museum about the tablet. Trying to keep the daughter (executor of the will) from inheriting it? |
||
| bigpeeler "But...but...the Holocaust! I deserve anything I steal. I'm owed this." |
||
| ZAZ The estate had to return the tablet because the man kept it hidden. The museum didn't know where it was and had no opportunity to sue for its return. Some Holocaust art cases went the other way because the art had been displayed after WW2. When stolen property is on public display the true owner must take action to preserve his rights. (Google terms: discovery rule statute of limitations.) |

Article: "The tablet was discovered in 1913 by a group of German archeologists in Iraq" Subby: " who looted it from Syria in 1913 " Subby is why we fight endless wars. |
||
| Mister Peejay But... what was the capital of Assyria? /got nothin' /perhaps the tablet was carried by a swallow or two |
||
| Notabunny bigpeeler: "But...but...the Holocaust! I deserve anything I steal. I'm owed this." Oh, I was already charged with a crime. I'm actually p*ssed because I should have kept that money. They charged me with all the charges I just got. |

Anyway, the family should return it to the Iraqi Embassy and let them decide where it goes. They will probably put it in their own museum, perhaps with a nice donor card saying, "donated by the River Flamenbaum, an associate of the Doctor who survived Auschwitz and liberated it from the Germans who stole it" |

It figures they would post this up on the Sabbath when most Jewish folks can't respond. Great FARK.. way to be just like the Nazis. /is this the same as invoking Tatsuma? //first time doing that, not sure what the procedure is ///this really has no other purpose |

Lionel Mandrake: Artifacts belong in museums. Yeah, that way the thieves looking to melt them for gold and theocrats looking to burn them to rewrite history can find them all in one place, with only rent-a-cops to protect them. /as Spielberg intended when he created that meme |

I don't have a problem with this. The family is trying to attribute special significance to the artifact, but it's just something the guy stole. (Mind you, if it had been some Nazi's helmet or gun or whatever, then the family should be able to keep it, even if the family of the Nazi wanted it back. But this is a museum piece.) |

Hell yeah it should be returned. Just because something horrible happened to you does not give you an excuse to steal. Unless it was stole from this guy in the first place his family has zero claim to it. |

The Germans didn't loot it, submittertard, they farking found it themselves. It belongs in a museum, not in the collection of a thief. If Syria/Iraq gets their shiat together, then maybe it should be in a museum there. |
||
| Jim_Callahan
Seems reasonable. Archaeological expeditions, at least post-Napoleon, are approved by the local governments, which typically set the terms on what you can and can't remove. Wholesale theft from museums not so much. |

Frankly, anything that holocaust survivors did to the Germans after their camps were liberated was warranted. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dachau_m assacre The Army troops were giving the survivors weapons and letting them into the POW areas to exact their own brand of "justice". A particularly astute brand of Karma occured to a camp guard who machine gunned a survivor running towards US Troops as the camp was being liberated. He was hit by no less than a full company of riflemen. The Tower actually fell down from the volume of fire. |

This item was found in 1913, not by some evil Nazi archeologists or some Indiana Jones-esque Nazi occult squad. This was legitimely the property of a museum, not some stolen item. I agree that Holocaust survivors had a major struggle and what that entailed, but its not like the item is going back into Nazi hands or something. The museum also waited for the guy to die before they asked it back. Its not like they are taking it from an actual Holocaust survivor. This family is depriving the entire world from learning from this item. |

![]() This is a treasure of the history of humanity, and belongs in public hands. The same logic applies to the looters who stole from the Iraqi museum of antiquities. |
