Camilla Fox, the executive director of Project Coyote

That seems entirely appropriate.

Project Coyote, a Larkspur nonprofit that consults with cities, ranchers and other groups on ways to live with coyotes without resorting to bullets, traps and poison.

If you're ranching to raise something big like cows or something well-contained like chickens then shrug, put up an extra fence around the coop, and buy an extra rottweiler (they're great pets too).

If you're ranching to raise sheep, small goats, free-roaming chickens, ducks, dogs, etc, or if you're breeding something that starts small like pigs, then the only real workable solution for coyotes is to shoot a few and hang them around your property. Coyotes are actually fairly smart so this works surprisingly well as a method of "marking your territory". You actually don't need to exterminate every single critter in the area to keep them out of your shiat.

If you live in a city, you don't have to care so long as they stay solo. If they revert to pack behavior then you'll have to exterminate them, but its rare that the local population actually reaches critical mass for that.

There aren't really any more gentle solutions than that, so I'm not sure what this organization's purpose is. I mean, I guess if they were offering to maintain nonlethal traps and relocate the things upwards of 100 miles away I'd let them do that, but that seems like a lot of effort for a creature that's slightly less rare than the grey squirrel.

Search results for coyote recipes are pretty lolzy

Mother in Law Coyote (MILC deluxe):
1. Put a big nasty chunk of coyote in a disposable turkey roasting pan (you won't want it back), douse with LOTS of pepper, garlic, and any other spice that can cover up that smell for awhile. Drive to mother-in-law's house for a visit.
2. Pre-heat mother-in-law's oven to 350.
3. Put roasting pan in oven, set oven timer for 1 hour, tell her you have an errand to take care of; drive to nearest steak house and turn off cell phone.
4. Order and enjoy the best tasting steak you'll ever eat!
5. Stop by auto-parts store, get that new battery/coil/spark plug wire set/whatever you've needed for the past week, install in vehicle. Next day have the old mangled part handy for when you're accused of leaving such a delightful aromatic meal behind. "But my truck broke down...I had to put in a new (insert part name here), and forgot all about the dinner...what do you mean it stank the place up? You must've overcooked it!"
(Alternative cooking method: use oven of another obstinate relative of choice, preferably one who you want to be barred from visiting again.)

Hey now, this is San Francisco. We won't be having any of your logic in our discussions on how to remain the bastion of liberal utopianism!

I had no idea such a thing existed. I'm a tree-hugging, critter lovin' hippy kind of person, but fark coyotes. I would actually rejoice if they went extinct.

Coyotes are all over the U.S. even way out here in Providence, RI. We've got a pretty fair collection of wildlife in the city:

Red Tailed Hawks
Eastern Falcons
Wild Rabbit though fewer because of the above
Raccoons
Coyotes
Wolves
Aquatics including ducks, geese and others.
Seals

You really don't think about so much wildlife in a city but it exists.

I'm all for coexisting, but the idea that only a "few feral cats" will go missing is hilarious. Please, come down to LA sometime, where as soon as you're even somewhat nearing the foothills (which is basically all around the metropolis), you have a helluva chance of encountering a coyote on the street at night with a cat in its mouth. And the farker will stop and stare your car down, instead of running off. Because they don't give a shiat about you or your car.

This will improve the environment, as feral cats kill hundreds of thousands of song birds a year.

SF is such a dump. I love how all the bleeding hearts I go on flickr meetups with there are the first ones to cross the street when they see a black man coming the other direction after dark.

but who cares what they think, they all are too busy giving hand jobs to their hero thomas hawk

But, but, this is a National Park! The highest priority is supposed to be feeding and protecting feral animal populations, not the wildlife!

This.

SF idiots who have outdoor cats will be thinking again if those coyotes find out you're raising live food for them.

/lost a cat to coyotes
//so did two other neighbors
//will stab the shiat out of any coyote that comes within arms reach

"...Golden Gate Bridge officials looked at a videotape that showed a coyote trotting across the bridge in the middle of the night."

I doubt any super genius coyote would go through the Waldo grade tunnel approach to the bridge after all the fake tunnel experiences.

I live in glen park-heard a few stories of coyotes attacking little dogs that were out for a walk with their owner (and leashed)-trying to keep my cat indoors at night

Not yet.

There are fairly reliable reports of mountain lions in I believe Wisconsin, although the official report is that it is "impossible" for the big cats to have moved so far east.

But if there are deer and moose, there will be mountain lions and wolves, give it enough time.
