Noted astrophysicist, theoretical astronomer, and Wu-Tang rapper GZA working on new Space-themed CD, "Dark Matter". Cool: He's been studying with physicists and cosmologists at MIT and Cornell, among other universities

What an awesome prospect. It probably won't surpass Liquid Swords and Beneath The Surface in greatness, but it'll hopefully be as good as Pro Tools.

Should be good, but Reggie Watts's improvised riff on space will still reign supreme.

Educational rap? It's been done, n***a.

Seriously though, anything to make people who listen to rap smarter. That's not a dig on rap. I like to see passive education: Video games with real history in the story lines or novels where some scenes take place in realistic workplaces that show that actual method of that craft. People who don't want to study things in a class often like to know about them once they're finally exposed.

Sounds awesome and I'm looking forward to this album big time.

Some of those Wu-Tang guys are seriously farking brilliant dudes. I think it was RZA that I heard interviewed on NPR a couple years ago and my jaw pretty much landed in my lap. He was seriously genius smart, and very well-read. He talked at length about sneaking off to the library, and learning shiat and not being able to tell other people in his hood so they wouldn't give him shiat for it.

It's not that I expect a rapper to be dumb, but I don't expect them to necessarily be a literal genius who loves ancient history and has a voracious thirst for learning.

I didn't seee much information in TFA, but I thought of a decent launching point:

"Dark Matter" could be a metaphor for African-Americans. They are unseen (metaphorically), but are a huge "gravitational" influence on American pop culture. They're responsible for Rock & Roll, Blues. Rap, Jazz... Their pull is inexorable, our culture coalesces around them, but they remain largely unseen.

/Of course, African-Americans a minority, whereas there's about 6 times more dark matter than "normal" matter...
//Also, they're not so invisible anymore.

As someone who detests rap, I have to say this:

Well, if you're gonna do something, you might as well do it right. Props to GZA for doing it right.

Word.

I'm not averse to rap as a musical genre - I've heard a few songs I've really liked - but generally the subject matter bores/irritates me.

This is intriguing. Bookmarked for further contemplation.

rap thread?

I rap for a livin' so I don't give a shiat
my banker laughs cuz, the money don't quit
so I made a statue out of hundred dollar bills
and put it on my window sill

when the thieves broke glass and took my cash
i twisted up a fatty with some Lebanese hash
then I took a nap, took a crap
funny how the word rap rhymes with crap

Wu-Tang has some of the most unique and interesting subject matter in hip hop history. Since this is a GZA thread, listen to Liquid Swords, one of the best albums ever.

Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson?

/I like at least some songs from every main genre in the US (hip hop, rock, electronic, country, pop, blues, latin, funk, soul, RNB, gospel, and jazz). Doesn't mean I don't think some are worse than others.

There hasn't been much rap with solid/insightful content that invokes some thought in a long time. I don't really care for GZA's lyrical style, but, I'll definately give this a listen.
