So Timothy Poe has now claimed: One Bronze Star, one Purple Heart, six Army Commendation Medals, eight Army Achievement Medals, Air Assault wings, and a Combat Infantryman's Badge. That is one hard core soldier

The Combat Infantryman's Badge (CIB) is also strictly awarded to soldiers who are either Infantry or Special Forces who have been in direct combat with the enemy. Medics get Combat Medical Badges (CMB), and everybody else gets a Combat Action Badge (CAB). As a Supply specialist, he would have earned a CAB, if he had actually gotten into a firefight with the enemy (not just deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq and stayed on the base).

There's no "I was assigned to an infantry battalion, so they gave me a CIB" rule, either.

I hadnt seen that before. Makes sense the photo is really from 2006.

1. 10th Mountain Division combat patch on a Minnesota NG soldier on his first deployment.

2. Not many guys were still mixing camo patterns in 2009.

3. Older body armor. It got upgraded in 2008ish.

4. Wearing the "dick flap" groin protector was mandatory around 2007, at least in Iraq.

They do give out CABs for fobbits, or at least they used to. I've got one myself. They were awarded in a blanket memo for our entire battalion. I guess being in the general vicinity of at least one mortar round at some point throughout the course of a deployment qualifies.

Nah, I was agreeing with you - the guy's a lying douchebag, but there are a lot of those around (Congress, for instance) so why should we care about this particular lying douchebag?

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the second case listed in that wiki article, but they haven't done so yet. Presumably, whatever they rule will finally settle the question once and for all. So it's not settled yet.

Stolen Valor cases are weird. You see the morons like Poe, who decided to boost his resume so he'd have an advantage on a freaking talent show, but you also have the sort that will pretend they're practically the reincarnation of Chesty Puller.

Then, you find out about the crazy ones - like a guy who actually did have a Silver Star and a Bronze Star, but who told people he had a number of fairly minor awards along with them. Awards that nobody outside of the military would even recognize, and were trivial after the two "big" medals.

The ones who claim to have the Congressional Medal of Honor are the worst. Not only is it an even bigger slap in the face, it's also the one that's most easily confirmed. If the guy you're talking to is under 50 years old, there's only three guys it could possibly be... and none of the three were from the Iraq war.

/four medals
//Good Conduct Medal was the top one

It takes a special kind of retard to lie about military honors/accomplishments. I don't understand what motivates people to do that, aside from greed. Other than getting a free beer or two the next time you hit a bar, what can you really gain from saying, "Oh yeah, I have four Purple Hearts. Yeah, took a wound in ________. I guess I'm just lucky."

Although thanks to the comments underneath the article, I have a new phrase to use to describe the trolls that populate Fark: "fetid sack of oozing dick drippings."

Not really.

One of the interesting things you run into when you read up on the various "real" Stolen Valor cases is that the people who get caught are mostly using their faked military records to pull off other scams. Very few are the "innocent braggart" types - almost all of the ones who get prosecuted are in the middle of some other crime when they get nabbed.

It's funny, though: the folks who see no problem with someone lying about their military record are almost always the same folks who hate the military in the first place. That's why so many of the "big" Stolen Valor cases involve groups like VVAW or IVAW. They use the fake "veteran" to spout anti-military propaganda, but then pretend it's no big deal when their guys get caught.
