The window has been charged with disorderly conduct and assaulting an officer.

FTFA:The police department is investigating how a shotgun got left in a cruiser with:
* its safety lock off
* a shell in its chamber
* he accidentally hit the trigger.

Yeah, that's an accident. :-P If he were a civilian, he'd be facing charges of unlawful discharge of a firearm.

What's the charge for getting thrown out of a moving vehicle?

Have you ever fired your gun while in a high-speed pursuit?

Officer failed to shout "stop resisting! stop resisting!" at the window during the incident. Obviously needs more training.

By gun, do you mean penis? And by high speed pursuit, do you mean farking?

My local force has never discharged a weapon deliberately towards a human.

There are however three Police cars being driven around with nice round holes in the floors.

/Ballistic bags - how do they work?

It's high time we stop considering "wearing a sidearm" as part of the job of being a cop. There are too many cops that shouldn't be carrying. Too frequently, if a cop shows up at the range while I'm there, after watching them for about two magazines, I leave because they're dangerous. Don't bother trying to encourage them to practice safer techniques and habits because the Dunning-Kruger Effect is in full force.

They should carry and use firearms on exactly the same basis as any other civilian, and that includes how they're treated after a shooting, even a righteous shooting. Being at legal jeopardy for screwing up with a gun shouldn't be a matter of "suspended with pay" or "internal investigation", but the appropriate criminal charges.

I'll make one exception to that policy: due to the nature of their job, done at public expense, for the public good, facing real public hazards, they cannot be prevented from carrying a sidearm on duty by their employer.

Once again, make it mandatory for all cops to be filmed while on duty (except for undercover work). Things will get sorted out rather quickly.

I have a distant cousin who as a cop was horsing around with a gun and shot a hole in the floor of the police station. That's what it does take to get you fired.

I work with someone who does defense pistol competitions (he knows some guys who were on Top Shot). When they get police officers who want to try it out, they get shown up by 50 year olds. Generally the police can't hit anything with their guns. That is why they have so many cases with 50 bullets fired and only 2 hits. Generally they are a menace at the range because they get all Farva out there.

Can we please use this incident as yet another example of why "police officers are highly trained professionals, thus normal people shouldn't carry guns" is such a bad argument?

In all honesty, I don't want to make this a pro-carry or anti-cop post, but there are more than enough stupid people out there to skew the argument any way you want, and thus it has no real value. We have a number of cops that can't seem to handle a firearm effectively, and equal reports of dumb people doing dumb things with guns. Can we finally get to the point that someones "training" doesn't mean what most people would have us believe?

"The gun's supposed to be unloaded," Dougan said. "Whoever had it out last neglected to take the round out of the chamber."

If the shotgun was in a car, there shouldn't have been a round in the chamber in the first place.

CSSis--

We had a really dumb officer when I was dispatching for an armed security company. 95% of my guys were solid pros, much better than your average cop, imo. This guy was the other 5%. He once managed to get his car stuck 20 feet out up to the axles in sand trying to make a 3-point turn.

Anyway, the guys had to turn in their weapons at the office, if they didn't carry their own firearms. This douchebag was turning in his gun one day, and while supposedly unloading the thing fired a round into the door jamb. We had a bulletproof window at the exchange port; but the wall was not reinforced.

I wasn't on that shift, but the hole was still there when I got there that night, and Beverly Hills PD was probably still laughing. Any other officer would have been fired on the spot, but this guy was such a hopeless fool, I think they kept him out of pity.
