This reminds me of a story Micheal Irving told about Jimmy Johnston when he coached him at Miami. The way the story goes Johnston had the team practicing way past their normally scheduled practice time. When some of the players started complaining by saying that they had homework due and test the next day to get ready for, Johnston told them them, "This is the University of Miami, you are here to play football. If you wanted to take test, you should have gone to Harvard."

I'd say one team has been to quite a few finals.

Sounds like there's some guy on the the tournament organizing committee who wanted to utilize his tiny bit of power to bully someone around, and will now get called to the floor by the national hockey board, and to a lesser extent, the nation, for being a dick because he could.

Always happy to see people like this get burned. (The committee douche, not the coach.)

Okay thats screwed up. The man should be lauded for allowing his team study not punished.

Well to be fair those kids have a better shot at the NHL than they do finding a job with a "Leisure studies" degree.

If studying was such a concern, don't attend the farking tournament in the first place. It's also bullshiat that they were so pressed for study time that an hour or two to attend a ceremony would have made a difference. What's more likely is that the coach has a problem with the ceremonies and was looking for a way to make a point.

Skipping the ceremonies is poor sportsmanship. It sounds like the coach wanted to do the tournament more than the players did. Coach needs to grow up. I'm okay with the suspension, but fining a volunteer is also a dick move.
