By losing the scoring machine that is Andrew Murray and a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2014? What am I missing?

/go Devils, want this to go to seven.

The Sharks want just enough to win games but not so much as to give away free pizza. (Old promo "Three in the net and Pizza you get." Later changed to "Four..." and then dropped after Thornton and Cheechoo were scoring tons of goals)

Monterey Bay should be safe now as the Sharks have been hibernating for a few months.

I don't know the Sharks' cap numbers, but maybe because the $4 million or so they'll pay Stuart will mean they can't go after Parise or trade for Nash?

I would say that subby was implying that they should be focusing on offense.

The Sharks have been just plain overrated for years now. No heart and no toughness, and fans around here are starting to get a little pissy about it.

This doesn't make sense at all. They trade for a guy that's a free agent in 3 weeks and has previously said he wants to live in San Jose. You'd think they would just sign him in 3 weeks and keep their draft pick. I don't know if Murray was part of the deal for salary cap reasons. I guess the Sharks GM just really likes the Red Wings and wants them to succeed even if it comes at his own expense.

They had to have been a little scared that the Ducks or Kings would go after him. Just a little though, a scrub and a 7th are nothing. That's worth getting a 3 week jump on the competition.

Yep. Holland has to make the move for Suter; it's the logical choice, and it's not like he hasn't made bold moves before (COUGH**Chelios**COUGH)

I just kind of wish this trade had been done last year though... I believe Stuart's numbers weren't too bad, but he simply was NOT effective this year, and the Red Wings suffered for it.

Sharks newest fan promotion should be "putts for a cause".

Auction off the ability to play 18 holes with your favorite Sharks player either after the regular season, or after they get eliminated in the first round. All proceeds go to charity.

/the Leafs could really make a charitable mint off the same idea

Have to agree about Stuart this past season, but I'm not sure you can say the Wings suffered because of it - his numbers every season look very similar.

1) i'm a big sharks fan and i don't mind this trade. brad stuart is a great defenseman, the fans always loved him, and it will be great to see him back in a sharks jersey where he belongs.
2) they still have enough money to go after parise, kostitsyn, or semin if they move dan boyle.
3) the sharks still have a tremendously talented team and they could make a run with their current roster even if they don't trade dan boyle. but they only have about two years left of productivity with this roster before they're in a lot of trouble, especially with all the young talent currently in the pacific division.

hey, i just read that the red wings aren't planning or signing andrew murray to a contract. does that mean that the sharks can turn around and sign him as a UFA or are there rules about him going back to san jose?

Because if there's one thing the Leafs need, it's more money. Actually this off-season could be interesting in Leafsland. New ownership taking effect, high draft pick, lots of cap room and some big UFAs. It'll be interesting to see if Burke gets pressured to waive his "No deals longer than five years" rule to land Suter or Parise.

I think it's kind of revisionist history about Stuart belonging a Sharks sweater. He never lived up to expectations in San Jose, and pretty much wore out his welcome as I recall. He was a solid 2nd pairing d-man for Detroit, who will miss him, but San Jose always expected a top pairing d-man out of his draft position.

Or, maybe I am totally off base, and he was completely beloved for being average? I guess that's the Sharks in a nutshell.

/somehow the Marleau train keeps rolling along in its boring, unremarkable way...

Sharks made the dumbest move trading Jamie McGinn for Daniel Winnik and TJ Galiardi

After the trade:
Winnik: G3A2
Galiardi: G1A0
McGinn: G8A5

Plus the sharks had 5 more games due to the playoffs.

They also need to get rid of Dan Boyle. He is basically a 4th forward who can't defend for shiat. Hopefully adding Stewart will help their defensive game. Lastly, they need to stop making trades at the dead line. Their passing is shiat because they add too many 'meh' guys so late in the season that they can't develop a passing game in that time.

I should add their 2011-2012 season stats before the trade

Galiardi: G8A6
Winnik: G5A13
McGinn: G12A12

I rest my case.

Brad f*cking Stuart.

Yeah, good luck San Jose. Detroit might have been able to hide his ineptitude, but you're not Detroit.

For those of you that haven't followed the story, Brad Stuart made it clear that he wanted to move back home and closer to his family after his contract expired. They tried moving to the Detroit area but his older stepdaughter didn't do well so his family moved back. Ken Holland and the Wings did what they could to accommodate him. I wish him the best. The bad thing for the Wings is that they've now lost 2 of their top 4 defensemen (Lidstrom and Stuart).

This gives the Sharks exclusive rights to negotiate with him for the next 3 weeks (and it's Stuart's preference to play for San Jose).

It's just to get exclusive negotiating rights before free agency. The Islanders did the same thing with Ehrhoff last year but obviously he didn't sign with them.
