That's what wrecked the steel industry. However in this case, the presence of old equipment is likely a function of a lack of business for a long period of time. If Starbucks sends enough orders, and they keep sending them, they'll be able to get new equipment. As for the labor cost, depending on just how many people it is and how much they make in a shift, while the local labor may cost more it may not translate to a significant amount per unit.

Starbucks is being run by the gun who founded it, CEO's who are also founders tend to have a bit more of a spine when it comes to stuff like that. I'm sure more than a few people suggested to James Sinegal that Costco could make more profit if they weren't so cushy with their benefits. But it's his company, he co-founded it, and as such it means something to him.
