This article helps demonstrate why US manufacturing is so screwed. They have old, slow machines that take longer to manufacture each unit, and the cost of the labor to run those machines for longer is much higher.

Good on Starbucks, but what happens to this company after that order is filled?

Charity is a nice story, but it's not how you grow an economy.

At least, it can't grow an economy all on its own.

FTFA:

Starbucks requested 20,000 mugs. The project allowed owner Clyde McClellan to double his staff-and continuing Starbucks orders have let him keep them employed, NPR reports.

That's what wrecked the steel industry. However in this case, the presence of old equipment is likely a function of a lack of business for a long period of time. If Starbucks sends enough orders, and they keep sending them, they'll be able to get new equipment. As for the labor cost, depending on just how many people it is and how much they make in a shift, while the local labor may cost more it may not translate to a significant amount per unit.

Good for Starbucks.

Now some wallstreettype™ is going to go chatter in someone's ear about how Starbucks is not meeting earnings expectations and they better start buying their bling from china or else.

I didn't think Starbuck would help a machine.

Starbucks is being run by the gun who founded it, CEO's who are also founders tend to have a bit more of a spine when it comes to stuff like that. I'm sure more than a few people suggested to James Sinegal that Costco could make more profit if they weren't so cushy with their benefits. But it's his company, he co-founded it, and as such it means something to him.

Maybe extend some credit to the domestic manufacturers to buy some new equipment?

Hey now. Why would a bank do that when they can just gamble with their deposits on the derivatives market instead? It's much more profitable, and if their gamble works out badly, they'll just get bailed out by the taxpayer!

So if nobody has a job in the US, who is going to be buying all that Starbucks coffee?

The Job Creators TM. That is why they need that tax break.

As a person currently working in US manufacturing, it isn't just the equipment that's slow.

Precisely. Unless we want to become China, we need to tell the Randroids to shut the fark up and move to Somalia already and start putting a bit of altruism back in our economic discussions.

Why free trade is poisonous to liberty 101. There is no loyalty to workers, people, vague sense of nationalism, there is only profit.

For a small piece of paper it carries a lot of weight.

This time, however, the company opted to stay domestic-even though it takes far longer for McClellan's firm to make the mugs on old equipment.

Rule #1 of how to doom a business. Never ever spend your profits on upgrading your equipment.

Hopefully they invest some money that they made off this order into retooling the plant
