On topic: I'd rather buy a used car and maintain it than buy a hybrid; I have no interest in buying a product that's a result of the mining they're doing in China for rare earth metals. Also, from an emissions POV, a well-maintained car will blow the same concentrations as new cars (professor of mine had a 1980s Lincoln Continental that he modified so there were no emission control devices, and dumped pure gas into the thing, and STILL couldn't get it to fail a California smog test). New cars are a waste of money. Put 1K in a savings account a year and you'll be able to afford any repairs that come up. And please, calculate your annual car payment before you tell me that 1K is too much to put away to maintain a car you own outright. |

It's inevitable from an engineering standpoint.) That'll eat up that $1k quite nicely and a lot of your booze money. Alternatively, you could buy low milage used vehicles and trade them to a high school student when they approach 80k. Someone has to buy the new vehicle if you want to keep getting used ones. |

I'm not talking about affordability, but about the maintenance itself, IE, what's going on with that car that requires setting aside 1k per year for maintenance? |

I'm not talking about affordability, but about the maintenance itself, IE, what's going on with that car that requires setting aside 1k per year for maintenance? At first, you might not spend that much. But it will average out. Considering that a new set of tires can easily run $400, and that other wear items like brakes and shocks aren't exactly cheap, you can put $1000 worth of maintenance into a car faster than you might think. Hell, I had one car where the spark plugs weren't accessible unless you had a mechanic open up the engine. And this is all just maintenance, not actual repairs. It also depends on how long you plan to keep the car. If you plan to run it for upwards of 250,000 miles (as I do with my present car) then over the long haul you will sink money into repairs. Things like CV joints, water pumps, fuel pumps, and A/C compressors can fail over time. Still, you will save significant money over the long haul by paying cash for an older car and keeping it repaired, versus paying interest on a loan for a new car. |
