Bill Nack's book on Secretariat talks about this, and the controversy in the days after the race. CBS even played Canonero II's record run and Secretariat's side-by-side. Secretariat "won." But Pimlico insisted that he didn't break the mark.

Even so, changing it today, the record would only be for the Preakness itself, not the Pimlico track record for the distance.

Saw him run his last race at the International Stakes at Woodbine in Toronto, 1973. Two dollar exactor with Big Spruce won $16.00 He was a beautiful horse. The program said "Big Red", and he really was.
