They're putting $200K behind the effort, so they're planning to attract one person?

I'm sure Niagara Falls is a hot bed of growth and full of jobs and affordable housing too. Totally not a bombed out, drug filled, hell hole like most of upstate NY.

It's limited to $7000 per person. So basically nothing considering the cost it would take to move to the area, and especially considering the very high unemployment rate in the area. Nice political grandstanding there.

I can tell from some of the lazers, and from seeing quite a few shoops in my time.

Touche. I had an English teacher in high school from Love Canal. Not sure if she's still alive. She had years of battling cancer. And grew up playing with brightly colored exploding phosphorous rocks.

To be fair, Larry messed it up as well in the original short. If you listen closely when he and Moe turn to assault Curly, he starts out with one before recognizing Moe is saying the other.

This is what happens when such programs are run by people who went to school practically for free in the 70's. The guy who thought up the program, if he went to college at all, probably paid $4000 for a four year degree, and thinks that $7000 is more than plenty for students nowadays.

Same deal as my father in law. His parents paid $4000 in 1976 for his degree, and over the next two years he bought and paid for a $40K house that he still lives in.
I paid $40K to get two degrees, what he paid for a god damn house, and graduated into a recession. Houses on his block run into the $300K range even after sitting empty for years. He wonders why, three years after college, I don't have a house or given him a grandchild, completely oblivious that it would be risky to do either one before I pay off my loans.

Austin, TX - are you paying attention? Stop trying to lure in talent from CA that you can't afford. YOU EVEN HAVE A FRIGGIN' UNIVERSITY. Work with it and give the desired students some benefits to staying there.

I know of many Austin businesses that are looking to hire expertise out of places like San Francisco, but on an Austin budget. Unfortunately, the Austin budget really only lends itself to home grown expertise.

No, in real life he's actually surrounded by a halo of white pixels.

In all likelihood, they'd commute to jobs in and around Buffalo. I had a :30 commute from north N.F. to downtown Buffalo for a couple of years. Traffic got a little worse in the summertime when tourists jammed the highway, but it wasn't usually too bad.

That being said, N.F. is an absolute craphole. If they want people to move in, they need to rout out that graft and corruption that has tainted downtown zoning for the last 40 years. Rainbow Mall? The Turtle? The water park? The wintergarden? All "attractions" that were entirely unnecessary and unjustified, built with city money in order to give kickbacks to mobsters.

To qualify, applicants will have to rent an apartment or buy a home within a designated downtown area.

There's the killer, right there. The DeVeaux neighborhood up near Niagara University is nice, as are parts of LaSalle over to the east. But there are about 2 nice blocks in downtown N.F., and the rest is a blighted wasteland that makes Fallout 3 look friendly and welcoming.

Doesn't sound like a bad plan. Do something to attract the best and brightest and hope they can help build something. Isn't that what America was found on?

Novel idea and just to be snarky, FTFA "The city is putting an initial $200,000 behind the idea." well that should help 3 new residents.

Midland, Texas.

Its economy is doing great, but there was some...irrational exuberance, to say the least.

If I was taking a job in the area anyway and had student loans I'd think about it. It may not pay off a significant percent of student loans, but $7k is still $7k.
