This is par for the course. The story I always heard was how an officer in the army was trying to have a second kid in secret. His wife gets the ultrasound and it comes back that it is a boy. She sends him a letter to tell him and is all excited. Political officer reads the letter (since he monitors the mail). He doesn't give the father the news, but instead forces the wife to abort. A couple of months later the father finds out about the forced abortion. Political officer ends up taking about half a magazine from the officer's service rifle, followed by a shooting spree in Beijing. Eventually they gun down father.

The funny thing is, one child is rapidly heading in the direction of failure since they're running out of workers to support the elderly. They're going to need to reverse it within a decade unless they want to totally fark themselves in the ass with a graying population.

If the people were allowed to make the decision, they'd ransack the food stores and gorge on every last bit, only to find themselves even worse off in a few weeks. Same goes for China - they are country heading toward starvation. They've got to take some stern measures to at least slow the free fall until a super-bug, famine, or war can cull some of their populace. As long as people behave like mindless cattle, they'll be treated as such. It's not the governments fault -- it's just their responsibility.

There are lots of countries with birth rates below 2. Most of Europe, Japan, many southeast Asia countries, most of the former Soviet Union, etc. Even Iran is nearly down to 2. So is Brazil.

Seriously though why will it? No nation that had made it through the second wave of industrialization has a population that breeds like rabbits. America's fertility rate just dropped below 2 in the last census and had been flirting with it for awhile. Germany is down at 1.36 and Japan is at 1.37. South Korea's managed to get it down to 1.15. Russia is 1.54.

Unless Brazil or China bucks the trend for birth rates to drop like a rock once you modernize, we have nothing to worry about.

Actually a birth rate roughly around 2 would allow for a gradual depopulation. As accident happen and premature death happens it slowly lowers the population without their being a sudden shift of demographics.

Not just the *SMART* ones, but the ones motivated to be successful.

Case in point, I'm friends with a couple that emigrated from near Guanzhou. Neither has a college degree, either American or from a PRC institution. But they work damned hard and have a successful business, and they've got 4 kids over here. Over there, they just wouldn't have had the opportunities they have here, and they wouldn't have been able to have as many kids.

What a God-awful thing to do to an innocent baby. I am not anti-abortion, but that's just too late to abort a child. I do not have any children, so I am not playing the accidental pregnancy card because I do. What a bunch of cold-blooded butchers.

This would make a good Asian revenge movie along the lines of "Lady Vengeance" or "Old Boy". For forcing her to kill her child she gets revenge by killing one child of each man who forced her to have hers killed. Then again, that's a little harsh, killing the children who had nothing to do with this. The "One Child Policy" doesn't apply to all ethnic or geographic areas in China:

7 months...I know a woman who is absolutely brilliant and amazing who was born at 7 months...normally it drives me nuts when someone calls abortion murder, but that's usually a hyper-conservative American talking about 1st trimester pregnancy. 7 months is a human being - that could be born and grow up to be an awesome person after some time in the NICU - that the Chinese just straight up murdered.

When the people accept a form of government where the government is supreme and is expected to provide everything in the peoples' lives, the government will arrogate to itself the life and death decisions that a free people wouldn't have to tolerate.

Not so draconian, considering that China's population was around .95 billion when the one-child policy was introduced, and is now over 1.3 billion. Obviously the Chinese are managing to have an average of over two children per couple despite the policy.
