However, witnesses explained how the paintings were simply too big for the men's getaway vehicle - a red Ford.

Just an odd thought; I'll grant I've only been to Sweden once, but I don't think I ever saw a single American-made car while I was there.

Stupid Thomas Crown Affair. Wooden canvas frames don't bend into a suitcase and fire sprinkler systems are not the deluge type in a place like the Met.

/sorry, rant off

Um, Step 1, buy a box cutter.
Step 2, flip frame over
Step 3, Cut canvas
Step 4, roll up painting
Step 5, stuff into tube

TADA

Alternatively
Step 1, buy rope
Step 2, put frame on roof of Whatever tiny european car we're talking about
Step 3, tie up frame
Step 4, drive away.

This is why I only steal small paintings. Like stamp-sized.

/I really want to meet these jackasses. Should be one heck of a party.

First plan causes damage to the painting. Possibly acceptable, if it's still very valuable and the thief is not a connosseur.

Second plan makes your car kinda stand out.

Yeah, I'm not a professional art thief, but I would've gotten further than these clowns, case 1 my fence might not get me top dollar for the painting, case 2 I just need to make it far enough to take the thing off the roof of the car and put it in the van that I'm going to rent, to come back and pick up the painting. I'm sure there is a way to get the canvas off the frame without damaging the paints, and if I had that knowledge I'd be making mad money like my favorite art thief Diabolik.
