| Grand_Moff_Joseph This puts Rmoney in an impossible position, since he's been stalling for time to find a way to quietly reject Rubio's plan. Now, he can't embrace Rubio's idea without supporting the WH too, and if he rejects it (which he will), he may as well shut that poorly made LAtino outreach site down, because it'll be game over on that front. |

The policy will apply to immigrants younger than 30 who arrived in the U.S. before the age of 16, have been in the country at least five years, have no criminal history and graduated from high school, earned a GED or served in the military. OH GOD THE HORROR |
||
| cman Until Obama moves the immigration policy from deporting illegals to focusing on human trafficking from gangs, I wont ever like what his policy is. |

| Dusk-You-n-Me I'm sure the GOP will support and defend this action just as much as they did religious institutions' insurance plans providing BC. Right? Link |

Suddenly, I like this Obama character a little more than I did yesterday. |

Yes, it looks like that will be the spin. Never mind that both Bushes and Regan granted temporary protected status for various groups. |

Yep. not only does it take Rubio out of VP discussions, but it totally boxes Romney (and by extension the GOP echo chamber) in on the issue. Now their only choices are embrace a WH move that was originally sponsored by a GOPer, or immolate themselves in front of the Latino voting base in the hopes of appeasing their teabagging overlords. |

It is very clever, and the kind of play that still makes me think Romney is going to have a very difficult uphill battle regardless of our fairly dire economic circumstances. I am thinking independent non Latino voters are split on this and don't know what they want, so there will be no net gain or loss for them. But the inevitably reflexive xenophobia this move will generate on the right will send Latinos running at flank speed away from the GOP. |

| AirForceVet President Obama will probably speak about this policy change Friday, 22 June at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials' annual conference in Orlando. Romney speaks at that conference on Thursday, 21 June. I sincerely believe Romney's sails will have no wind there that day. |

| Grand_Moff_Joseph Via CNN, some cold hard facts on immigration: Below are a few facts about immigration in the United States: - The number of illegal immigrants in the United States was estimated at 11.5 million in 2011, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. - The illegal immigrant population grew by 27% between 2000 and 2009, according to the Department of Homeland Security. - Sixty-three percent of the illegal immigrant population (approximately 6.8 million) entered the United States before 2000. (DHS) - Fifty-eight percent of the illegal immigrant population is from Mexico. (Pew) - Twenty-four percent of illegal immigrants reside in California; 16% reside in Texas. (DHS) And here are recent developments relating to immigration in the United States: - 2008: The Department of Homeland Security apprehended 792,000 foreign nationals. Eighty-eight percent of those arrested were natives of Mexico. Immigration and Customs Enforcement apprehended 379,000 people. (DHS) - 2008: The Department of Homeland Security removed 359,000 illegal immigrants from the United States. Of those, 69% were repatriated to Mexico; 8% were repatriated to Honduras; 7.7% were repatriated to Guatemala. (DHS) - 2008: More than 810,000 illegal immigrants accepted offers to return to their home countries without being forcibly removed. (DHS) - 2008: The Department of Homeland Security removed 97,100 criminals who were also illegal immigrants. Of those, 36% had been convicted of drug-related crimes. (DHS) - 2009: The number of children born to at least one unauthorized-immigrant parent was 350,000. These made up 8% of all U.S. births. (Pew) - 2010: The total number of unauthorized immigrants in the nation's labor force in United States is 8 million. They made up 5.2% of the labor force in 2010. (Pew) - 2010: About 1.04 million people received legal permanent resident status. Of those, 139,120 were born in Mexico, 70,863 were born in China, and 58,173 were born in the Philippines (DHS). - 2011: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement removed 396,906 illegal immigrants from the United States, the largest number in the agency's history. Of those, 216,698 (nearly 55%) had been convicted of felonies or misdemeanors. (ICE) - April 23, 2012: The Pew Hispanic Center announced that net migration from Mexico to the United States had stopped and possibly even reversed. The center noted that from 2005 to 2010, about 1.4 million Mexicans immigrated to the United States, and about 1.4 million Mexican immigrants and their U.S.-born children moved from the United States to Mexico. |

| gilgigamesh RobertBruce: He could reject this plan, come out strongly in favor of LEGAL immigrants, garner their favor for doing it right, going the hard but fair route, and still be able to crack down harder on illegals later, were he to be elected. You're ignoring some important practical realities here. First, the Latino community is hopelessly intertwined with legal and illegal residents; often within the same family. What you are suggesting sounds reasonable to you, but to Latinos sounds like a giant wedge driving right down between friends, cousins, brothers and sisters, parents and children. Second, you are underestimating the bigots on the right who are going to lose their shiat over this, and explode in a frenzy of xenophobia and racism that will remind Latinos why they tend to favor democrats in case they've forgotten. |

It also has a long term benefit of encouraging these young folks to work through the full citizenship process (which many of them were likely to do regardless). Once they do, they'll remember which party gave them a chance when its time to vote. In fact, the long term benefits to this move are numerous: 1. Making them legal workers takes away a lot of potential cash-only labor for crooked business owners 2. As legal workers, they now pay income taxes on their wages; good for the Feds and state budgets 3. Even if they work hourly jobs, as legal workers, they can opt for insurance coverages, thus negating their need to use free care at ERs; saves healthcare dollars for everyone |

| keylock71 Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: Obama's playing rope-a-dope with Romney. That's what I think, too. The contraceptive ruling, gay marriage and now this... I don't know. Strikes me as a concerted effort to get the unhinged howler monkeys in the GOP howling. Romney's unfavorable number with independents is somewhere around 47%. Stuff like this forces Romney to pander to the GOP base, which doesn't exactly score him points with moderates and independents... Which is where this election is going to be won. |
