skinink: I feel bad for the guy who was arrested because this idiot lied. They dragged the 52 year old suspect to court and the prosecutors asked for a high bail, plus the guy's criminal record was dragged through the press, even though the guy had already served time for those crimes and they had nothing to do with the shooting, except it made the cops and the DA look like they knew what they were doing. I wonder if the guy could successfully sue the cops for how they treated him.
And I hope they treat the hitch hiker as harsh as they treated the innocent suspect. What an idiot. Along with that guy in Berlin who made up the story about being raised in the woods, I think people are going nuts.

Hitler said that?

Well, I don't know.

He sounds perfectly qualified to write a book detailing the modern American psyche.

Don't send him to prison. He'll sue himself and, as a ward of the state, will get paid for shooting himself (it has been tried). Blindfold and drop him in the middle of another country and see if he can hitch his way back.

That's retarded. Sue the cops for doing their job? They acted in good faith and didn't do anything wrong. You don't want your criminal record to be an influence in whether you are suspected of a crime? DON'T COMMIT CRIMES IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Now, could he sue the hitchhiker guy that falsely reported that he was shot? I dunno, but I sure hope so.

He didn't want the cops to spend any more of their valuable time on his case, he preferred that they help other unfortunates instead. So he came up with this confession business.

Scanning through those, the words 'fake', 'set up' or 'himself' never appear.
It seemed to be just assumed that this would happen.

Too dangerous- too much work. Besides, I already HAVE all the ideas to write down, they're awesome. The actual hitchhiking will be boring as hell. I already made up far better, inspirational stories anyways.

Can you imagine the raw excitement of a completely unembellished account? "Took a little over a week, this one guy smelled pretty bad, heard that 'Call Me Maybe' song on the radio 87 times, thinking about buying a GPS unit of my own- they seem pretty cool."

There were 3 guys who expected a blowjob for it, and this old lady who wanted to talk to me about Jesus yet apparently knew nothing about him. Frankly, the blowjob guys were more polite. Then I got scabies...

Wasn't the suspect described as being white? Where is the Reverend Al Sharpton for this innocent arrested guy, who was unjustly villified merely because he matched the description. Merely because of his race.

Well that's lame... very lame.

I mean, if you accidentally shoot yourself, just admit you shot yourself. Yeah, it's embarrassing, but that's still far better than possibly getting someone else in trouble for something they had nothing to do with.

The main joke in this book is that it contains only 100 things to do when you are bored.

Assuming that's true, what an asshat... That's just dumb. So instead of just writing a book, he farked himself and shot himself... how does someone even think that is a good plan, let alone actually follow through with suck a stupid plan?

As for the last thread... My main point in what I wrote in the last thread was that there might be some dangers when out hitchhiking, but not always... and even if you do run into a dodgy situation, it doesn't have to turn out to be a catastrophe. This turn of events seems to support my original point. Apparently the biggest danger on the road for this asshat was himself.

What if a car hadn't come along and helped him? Heck, might have been better if he had bled out on the side of the road after shooting himself on purpose... might have saved us (humans) from future embarrassment of having someone so farking dumb* in our ranks.

* I have no problem with people who are benignly or even sweetly dumb... they're just not bright, but not bad people... it's the greedy/malicious/mean spirited dumb people that I dislike so intensely.

/csb hitchhiker story...

30 years ago I was driving across the Southwest part of the US. I had always stopped and picked up hitchhikers and never had any issues - in fact I'd met many really interesting people. On that trip I picked up three:

1st was a French couple who had hitchhiked across Canada, flew to Disneyworld, FL, and then started traveling across the South. They were on their honeymoon. They knew like 20 words of English and with the little French I remembered from High School, it was a lot of fun. They rode with me over 16 straight hours. (Texas is freaking wide). (He was an engineer for Blaupunkt - how cool was that?). Dropped them off at Flagstaff - they were heading to the Grand Canyon.

Drove about 5 miles and picked up the 2nd, an older gentleman who - a few years earlier - had survived a real, old-fashioned western duel, but one of the bullets passed through the bottom portion of a lung, hit the back ribs, and ricocheted down - tearing up a good section of bowel, a chunk off the end of his liver and a kidney. He lost something like 40 lbs while in the hospital - nothing but bones, leather skin, and handrolled cigarettes he assembled every 20m or so from a Red Man tobacco pouch (even though he was down to one lung). When he got out of the hospital, he discovered his significant other had taken a baseball bat to his favorite car (50's T-bird he had been restoring - iirc she was the cause of the duel.) He didn't trust himself not to throttle her, so he left the state.

He wound up in Oregon panhandling, and the SoB actually found good color. Made enough cash to go back home, settle his affairs, and purchase/ship the equipment he needed to make a bigger haul before the next winter set in. He was down to his last few bucks, but thought once he got back to his site, he would be able to retire after busting his ass for a few years. I dropped him off in Kingman where he thought he could catch a ride north...

The 3rd... well this was the one time I had a problem - it only takes one. Picked him up at that same truck stop in Kingman, and he needed to get to Vegas - I got the impression he was really really in trouble. I told him I'd take him as far North as I could and would drop him at another truck stop, but I was continuing on west - towards Laughlin, then NW towards Joshua Tree highway. He said he'd take what he could get - It's just a short distance from Kingman to where the highway 'y's off away from Vegas - but I didn't think that much about it....

Until, about a mile from my exit the asshat pulls a revolver and says I'm taking him to Vegas. It's an interesting feeling seeing the bullets looking at you in the revolver a couple feet away.

It pissed me off.

I'd been driving @75mph the whole way, I was wearing my seat belt and my crappy little car had a driver air bag - no passenger bag. I looked at him, smiled and yanked the wheel - we're now going 75mph down the shoulder - straight at the nearest tree. He literally screamed WTF! and I said: 'drop it, or they'll be picking your teeth out of that tree'. He peed himself, flung the gun on the ground, and I slammed on the brakes - his face smashed on the dash and sort of slid up and into the windshield - got a cut right at the hairline - bled like a sieve.

I yelled pretty loudly for him to get the Fark out of my car - soon as his feet were out the door, I stomped on the gas - made it about 200 yrds before I had to pull over; my legs and arms were shaking so bad I didn't think I could keep the car on the road. When I got control of myself I could see him standing in the middle of the road - cold night - and I realized all his 'stuff' was still in the car.

I then probably did the wrong thing - (my Dad chewed my ass when I told him what I did). I picked up his revolver, emptied all the bullets on the floor, then turned around and drove back - opening the window. I could hear the guy as I was slowing down yelling: 'Crazy MF'er - stay away from me!' - crying, bleeding, peed pants, and freezing his ass off. I threw his gear out the window, showed him the empty revolver and said: 'you look like you're in trouble and need this - behave yourself.' and dropped it on his bag.

He ran up, put on his coat, grabbed a sock out of his bag and tried to control the bleeding. All he said was Crazy MF'er over and over as I drove away.

//true - really really. I made an effort to quit picking up stressed out looking hikers after that.
