Django Unchained promo shoes? |
||
| Mad_Radhu That's terrible! Seriously, who puts orange and purple together? |
||
| jayhawk88 The better story here is that shoes are now to the point where Nike is releasing special edition lines for St. Patrick's Day. |

Really? People are mad over this? It's been 150 years. Everyone who was a slave at any point in their life is now dead. How about we grow up and start acting like adults. |
||
| tgregory
Prisoners have worn the shackles, too. Not just slaves. While the idea may be dumb, if you think it's racist...you might be racist. Quite a stretch. |
||
| opiumpoopy
Well, Adi Dassler was just a little bit Nazi. (hey, weren't all the cool kids) So the author should maybe be careful when joking about swastikas etc on shoes... |

Uh, there are no living black American slaves alive today... Pretty sure there are still plenty of slaves out there in the world. It's not like we were the only country to ever have slaves. Or the first. Or the last. |

I'm assuming they only come in Cincinnati Bengals colors. |

Or the first. Or the last. Which is not the complaint. Dr Boyce Watkins, writing for Your Black World, said: Shackles. The stuff that our ancestors wore for 400 years while experiencing the most horrific atrocities imaginable. |

bhcompy: Everyone who was a slave at any point in their life is now dead. Excuse me. Allow me to introduce myself. I'm divorced, support-paying male. |
||
| BarkingUnicorn I hear a lot of kids get their new $200 sneakers stolen. The shackles may help prevent that. This isn't racist, which implies antipathy towards a supposedly inferior race. It's demographic marketing; they're going for the prison chic crowd. |
||
| ghall3
So we are about 6 months away from the first "Boy, 14, has foot amputated during sneaker robbery" story? Awesome. |

Meh. I bet African Americans will still wait in line to get them. |

Images of slavery asside, who thought putting plastic chains and shackles on shoes was a good idea? Guess I'm too old to understand. |

Mr.Tangent: Images of slavery asside, who thought putting plastic chains and shackles on shoes was a good idea? Guess I'm too old to understand. In certain circles, hi-tops are more of a fashion statement than a piece of practical clothing. In those circles, the more ridiculous, the better. |

Mr.Tangent: Images of slavery asside, who thought putting plastic chains and shackles on shoes was a good idea? Guess I'm too old to understand. True. I don't even see the purpose in shackling your shoes to your legs. Stockings? Yes: ![]() Shoes? Not so much... |

Why do people insist on going by what something means to them as opposed to what it's intended to mean, insist that what something represents to them is what it is period and refuse to recognize that not everyone sees things the same way they do? How is that not arrogant? /DRTFA |

Wait a second - this is real?!? The first time I saw this picture, I thought it was some social commentary about being a slave to fashion, or something. |

I've said this before in other athletic shoe threads... HAVE YOU SEEN WHAT THE URBAN/SUBURBAN YOUTH OF TODAY PUT ON THEIR FEET ALREADY? Get your Mike Vick, Todd Marinovich, Mark Chmura, Pac Man Jones, and Ray Lewis types to endorse these with a fancy tag line like "I don't break rules, I break records" or "I am my own master" and they will sell. I just hope chain in a bit longer since some that would be the prime demographic for such a product are already wearing house arrest ankle bracelets. Stack that shiat, yo. |

WhiskeySticks: I just hope *the chain *is a bit longer since some *who are the prime demographic for such a product are already wearing house arrest ankle bracelets. Stack that shiat, yo. fixed that for myself... Also just noticed the grey and white stripes on the shoes...much like old timey jailbird duds. |

I've stolen either 2 or 3 pair of Adidas. I have to tell you, total crap. I should have demanded a refund. Of my time. /yes, you f**king right I'm serious. Look, if you can't make a product worth stealing, then GTFO. |

I'm pretty sure Adidas was just trying to be "Edgy". Who makes a shoe to promote slavery or push jail ethnic percentages in the face of a minority? While yes, it's a tasteless shoe and looks stupid as hell, I'm 100% sure the CEOs of Adidas weren't sitting in their chairs at the concept meeting going: "With this shoe, we will once again be able to subjugate Black people! THE SOUTH ALWAYS WINS!" |
||
| groppet
Maybe they are just being marketed to people into bondage |

People are stupid. Not Adidas, but those that think this is related to slavery. I guess all chains should be banned? Give me a break. |

People in predominantly black frats brand themselves. I guess somebody thought they saw a way for there to be a marketing tie-in. Bill Hicks was right. |

If it's so outrageous as a product, no one will buy it and it will fail and go away all on its own. |

First thing in my mind when I saw them? Prisoners. Why the hell would you model a shoe to make it look like you're wearing shackles? Besides that, they look god awful. |
||
| untaken_name
Wait, when did we revise the calendar? I'm pretty sure 1600s-1850s isn't 400 years. Also, shouldn't Jews be offended as well? After all, they were slaves in Egypt for hundreds of years, too. |
||
| Assimilate This
To all who criticize these shoes as evocative of slavery and prison, I understand your point. But where were you when the stupid baggy-pants-below-the-ass fad started? Was that not supposed to have come from prison culture, giving young black men "street cred" or some such nonsense? |

tgregory: Prisoners have worn the shackles, too. Not just slaves. While the idea may be dumb, if you think it's racist...you might be racist. Quite a stretch. It's racist because we all know who is in those long lines for, and riots over, limited edition shoes. Nobody wants to say it, but that is the truth. |

No, that was a cunning propaganda ploy by police to give fat cops the advantage when chasing criminals. Also to give them a convenient excuse for shooting unarmed suspects in the back, as the motion to pull up your baggy-ass retard pants is similar to the one you might make to reach for a piece. |

They're certainly kind of dumb looking but I don't understand the selective outrage about things that might be evocative of past bad things. Do we criticize people who dress up like pirates because there are descendants of people raped/killed/etc by pirates? Or pirates still around today? It's just stuff like that that puzzle me. |
