| New domain names are coming since we clearly need more unqualified successes like .mobi, .xxx and .travel |

| Cythraul I wonder if they'll make more specific domain extensions for porn like .penis, or something along those lines? |
||
| gingerjet
That's odd - I haven't seen my daily American Family Association action alert complaining that .xxx domains will lead to more porn on the internet and I should call someone to complain. /opens up porn |

| Uchiha_Cycliste I want Oracle to pick up .oracle for their SW and .sun for their HW |

Cythraul: I wish I could do that. Alas, I'd get fired. One of the many benefits of working from home. |

More TLDs means more problems. That's about it. |

Saw this a few days ago... Link "Both the US drugmaker Merck & Co and its German rival Merck KGaA appear to have applied for the .merck ending, which may trigger an auction process." FFS, WHY do you want a TLD of your company name?? Are you going to have http://www.merck.merck? Or maybe triple down and be at http://merck.merck.merck. Sometimes I think the people who request/buy these things really don't understand them. |

this is how the internet ends. You want access to .business websites? You pay a subscription fee to your ISP. You want .xxx access? You pay a subscription fee. This is how it happens, we stopped paying for cable TV packages, so they moved into the internet. |

I worked on the TLD launch for .tel. Yeah, no one has ever heard of it. |

To recap: Fark ICANN. Fark cybersquatters. ICANN runs a walled-garden. We never really had a problem with too few TLD to choose from, though squatters hording short domain names has been a nuisance. Now that they're vetting nearly a thousand more TLD, we may as well throw in the towel and just register *any* 256-character string to associate with an IP address. Noone types in URLs any more! We just click on links. Noone hunts for a good home by trying "homes.com, homes.org, homes.net". The .shark has been .jumped. What we need is a service like OpenDNS which, instead of blocking certain ICANN-formatted sites, allows us to resolve additional non-ICANN-formatted sites. That's sure to make ICANN all huffy, but what can they object to? ICANN can't stop us from editing our HOSTS file to add handy URL shortcuts. ICANN can't tell a household or company not to set up such shortcuts on their intranet. ICANN can't stop us from outsourcing our shortcuts to a 3rd-party nameserver. ICANN can't stop us from opting-in to a community that shares shortcuts. ICANN can't stop a hypothetical company like "NowUCANN.com" from letting folks pay a dollar a year to publicly associate "http://FarkIsAnEuphemism" with an IP address. It would basically just be a new twist on a URL-shortener. Oh, and it would put ICANN in sharp perspective. |

We're not quite down to clownpenis.fart level, but we'll get there eventually at this rate. |

Now, all idea sharing will come to a shrieking halt as the comments disintegrate into a quarter mile long flame thread about grammar... |

Sometimes I think the people who request/buy these things really don't understand them. Probably true since most are registering in order to protect their brand. I guess competitors having $185k + annual fees just to mess with your trademark is a real threat. Or else there is a real belief they can use it for branding - all ads will end with "Go to http://merck/drugname to learn more!" /which will all redirect to merck.com... |

Damnit ICANN, switching from a hierarchical (or semi-hierarchical) namespace to a flatter namespace is a bad idea. |

Well, maybe for marketing purposes: http://jobs.merck Still think its stupid. I think it's more useful than that, especially when the internal and external webs are only separated by a password (and possibly a vpn tunnel). Where I work is like that. For merck they could have (external) jobs.merck, purpose.merck investments.merck corporate.merck Internally they could have projects.merck chipwiki.merck employees.merck partners.merck document.merck. Especially for the confidential and need-to-know documents it's one further way to drive home the point and remind them they are looking at company stuff and not just browsing the web. |
