Why should you always bring two Baptists with you when you're going fishing? If you only bring one, he'll drink all your beer. |

Well...I suppose progress of a sort is being made. When I was a growing up all the SBC churches I knew about, including my own, wouldn't let African-Americans work as janitors, let alone join the congregation. |
||
| Harry Freakstorm Gonna be the longest baptism ever. Full immersion, 10 maybe 15 minutes. |

I like how the Southern Baptists hold their convention in the capital of debauchery. |

When I was a growing up all the SBC churches I knew about, including my own, wouldn't let African-Americans work as janitors, let alone join the congregation. That's the impression/stereotype I had of SBs. SBC having a black president. It's like opposite land. |

Oh...the church has been all modern since.... from wikipedia: The SBC became a separate denomination in 1845 in Augusta, Georgia, following a regional split with northern Baptists over the issues of slavery. After the American Civil War, another split occurred: most black Baptists in the South separated from white churches and set up their own congregations. ... In 1995, the Convention voted to adopt a resolution renouncing its racist roots and apologizing for its past defense of slavery, segregation, and white supremacism.[31][32] This marked the denomination's first formal acknowledgment that racism had a profound role in its early and modern history. By the early 21st century, there were increasing numbers of ethnically diverse congregations within the convention. In 2008, almost 20 percent were estimated to be majority African American, Asian or Hispanic. The SBC then had an estimated one million African-American members.[33] This has also been encouraged by a series of resolutions recommending the inclusion of more black members and to appoint black leaders.[34] |

I saw him preach the Sunday before last, "Men Day" at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church. He knows his congregation well, almost all by name. He was very welcoming to all guest groups (I was part of a group of 70). I'm still not a big SBC fan, but change is easiest when it comes from within. /Still will never submit to my husband. //Non-UCC congregationalism 4 lyfe!!!11eleventy |

Two questions. First, will this be sufficient to demonstrate to non-Baptists that the SBC has indeed changed and has made real progress with the concept of racial equality? My guess is no - the perpetually, professionally aggrieved will never let go of anything they view as an opportunity. Second, how long until people outside the SBC start referring to the Reverend Luter as an Uncle Tom? My guess - couple weeks, tops. |

Allen. The end.: Southern baptists are evangelical. No, Southern Baptists are evangelical. Some southern Baptists, like certain Primitive Baptists, aren't evangelical at all. |

Dull Cow Eyes: Oh...the church has been all modern since.... 1965 1975 1985 1995 from wikipedia: The SBC became a separate denomination in 1845 in Augusta, Georgia, following a regional split with northern Baptists over the issues of slavery. It was looked at as a positive development by the leadership and by everyone I knew there. Can't speak for the whole congregation personally since it had over 2000 members at that time and a bunch more 'regular attenders'. |
