I have a soft spot for Garfield's birthday strips for some reason I don't understand. It's the only time I ever read Garfield -- June 19, every year.

So, this morning I look up their website, and toward the lower left of the screen is an ad proudly proclaiming that their desktop widget "works with Vista!"

And I realized that it really sums up everything you need to know about people who read Garfield on a regular basis.

Is it just me, or has this run up to this 12th anniversary been rather pointed and mean spirited?

I've heard Jim Davis hates Garfield, but it's kinda showing this past few weeks.

For some reason, whenever I get the comics out of the newspaper, I always end up reading Garfield. Most of the time they suck, but I read them every time.

I also do the same with Family Circus, but that's more to see what kind of stupid wholesome crap they're getting into this week. It does remind me of one of the best Family Guy bits

It's a cartoon strip for children.

12. It's a thinly-veiled commentary on the Kennedy Administration. Garfield is JFK, Odie is Ted, Jon is Joe, Nermal is Bobby, Arlene is Jackie, Lyman is lobotomized Rose. Mondays are the Commies, the spiders are the Cubans and the lasagna is all the top-shelf ass he scored.

Following the book industry's convention it should be "Jim Davis' Garfield" instead of "Garfield by Jim Davis."

It was truly funny back in the day, and I still think it has some of the funniest drawings I've seen in strips. But I do have one question...

I don't know, I think he's on some kind of "enjoy life while you're young" story line, and it was gay rights before that.

Loved Garfield as a kid- the TV show was a favorite, read all the comic book compilations, you name it, and hence I feel awful mentioning how bad it is now. Sort of like my relationship with the Simpsons.

Funny thing is I still have a few of the older books, and when I pick them up I still chuckle at a few of the comics. Makes me feel better knowing that Garfield actually was a good comic when I was a kid, and it's not just my tastes changing for these things.

I wonder if that would be as poignant and sad-hilarious if I hadn't grown up reading those stupid Garfield books in the car when we went on road trips with my parents in the early 80s. If we didn't have Garfield as part of the cultural currency common to all of us, would that comic even register? Would we care?

Yeah, Garfield sucks to adults, but most people go through a Garfield stage as kids (myself included). Then I progressed on to Calvin and Hobbes and then the Far Side.

There were three -- the original "friends are there" song, the "party" song, and the hip-hop song they used in the (crappy) final season.

Funny thing is, characters would sing or hum the original theme song throughout the series.

Extra funny cause a friend of mine has a big fat male tabby cat that likes a good belly rub... and he recently contracted an inner ear infection and had a serious case of the Dizzy-cats for about 4 weeks.

And that's roughly what his eyes looked like for that month.

/He's better now, totally harmless once he got his antibiotics.

I miss newspapers. You could swat bugs and misbehaving dogs with them. You could make hats out of them as well. I've tried all these things with a lappy but it's just not the same.

Garfield was pretty much the same. We were just brain damaged children who hadn't seen funny, and formed positive memory associations with it, so the old ones are 'still funny'. Much like snl.
