Ah, the Colbert strategy of going even more extreme than your most extreme guests. I'm glad this worked, and their observation that other parties are hijacking the political discussion is very keen. I wonder if anymore of this will happen for other issues in the general election... |

| hubiestubert Too bad that they seem to hate Ben Franklin's legacy... Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts. Franklin is probably best known in the library community for founding the Library Company of Philadelphia in 1731. It was America's first lending library and can lay claim to being the predecessor of the free public library. For a brief period (Dec. 1733-Mar. 1734) Franklin actually served as the librarian for the Library Company. He also served as its secretary from 1746 to 1757. Franklin considered the Library Company to be the "Mother of all N. American Subscription Libraries ....". "The only thing more expensive than education is ignorance." --Benjamin Franklin "An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest" --Benjamin Franklin Not to mention Thomas Jefferson, the well known Commie... Books constitute capital. A library book lasts as long as a house, for hundreds of years. It is not, then, an article of mere consumption but fairly of capital, and often in the case of professional men, setting out in life, it is their only capital. --Thomas Jefferson "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state ofcivilization, it expects what never was and never will be." --Thomas Jefferson Or that OTHER Commie John Adams There is such seduction in a library of good books that I cannot resist the temptation to luxuriate in reading. --John Quincy Adams Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people, who have...a right, an indisputable, unalienable, indefeasible,divine right to that most dreaded and envied kind of knowledge, I mean the characters and conduct of their rulers." --John Adams |

[lh3.googleusercontent.com image 640x521] Sorry, but Republicans before the 1960s really don't count as Republicans. They really are RINOs, because until the mid-20th century, it was the Democrats (Southern Democrats especially) that were generally the ass backward conservative party while the Republicans were more forward thinking, with guys like Teddy Roosevelt who would have had his Birf certifict questioned by today's Republicans. Nixon was the first modern Republican president. So, yeah, it's cute to throw up pictures of Teddy Roosevelt or Abraham Lincoln and mention they were Republicans, but they were about as close to a modern day Republican as Strom Thurmond would be to a Democrat |

That is the issue. The constant whine of Socialism, while trying to tear down the foundations of our republic is very much an issue. Illustrating that is necessary. While that is a noble cause, you're talking to an audience that is generally ignorant of anything from BR (Before Reagan). In fact, that's one of the major problems with everything.... we happily ignore history and doom ourselves to repeat it. Hell, without TV and other modern distractions, we would have probably broken out into a Civil War by now with as stupid as both sides have become on everything. |

The library budget is a very small part of the total budget. If taxes on the total budget have to be raised 0.7% to cover the shortfall, the library can't shave 0.7% from its much smaller budget and cover the same shortfall. I don't know how to make myself any clearer. What is your point? |

First off, not a tea-partier... However I pay taxes for my cities' library and yet because I live less then 1/4mi outside of the city limits, I must pay $80 per year for a membership (on top of the % paid every year in property tax). Its bullshiat like this + the fact that libraries are becoming less and less relevant in the modern information age that I wouldn't feel bad about more of these libraries going out of business. |
||
| cretinbob I work for a small village ambulance service that contracts with two towns. The Executive Director and CFO were mismanaging the hell out of it, not sending in billing and really shiatty record keeping. Long story short, they both got canned, So then an outcry arose (from them) that the village was in debt like $20k because of the ambulance service (The amount of debt was exactly what the new DPW truck cost btw). So they set up their own private ambulance service and went to one town supervisor, made him a board member and got him to loan them $100k of tax payers money so they could rent some equipment. Then they made board members out of the town council members who would vote for them to have contracts so they could serve each town instead of the current village service. The village service charged something like $5k a year over 5 years for their contract, but these two d-bags claim that's expensive. But they can't explain how the towns subsidizing a private company is OK. The state Comptroller is making a formal investigation because the deal is so crooked all the way around. I expect someone to end up in jail. Yes, they are Teabaggers. This plan was also put to a public referendum and was soundly voted down, like 90-10. People often do see through politicians bullshiat. Of course there is a fight over raising the school budget like 2%, but I think the backlash over this ambulance deal just has pissed everyone off. |
