FTA: Democrats led by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York are resisting a proposal by Agriculture Committee leaders in both parties to trim a modest $250 million from the program each year by cracking down on abuses.

both parties want to trim 250 mil and this is a problem? Too many people on food stamps as it is. I see people on food stamps all the time buying cart loads of nice food and putting it in their nice car, on taxpayer money. Im sure they got a cell phone, and cable on the HD big screen too.Sure there are people who really need food stamps, but they are over run by mooches using them to supplement their lifestyle.

"What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works."

FTA While critics such as Sessions say the program is ripe for savings, the department says SNAP is doing a good job of eradicating fraud and error, with only 3 percent of payments in 2010 being excessive or going to ineligible households.

He has to be joking - why else would anyone screw with a government program that successful?

Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

37 "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

40 "The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'

41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'

44 "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'

45 "He will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'

If i lost my job right now, I'd go on food stamps. I'd also have a nice car, a nice phone, and a big HDTV.

The car is paid off. The phone and cable are on long-term contracts that would be more expensive to early terminate. I also don't have a landline. Plummeting HDTV prices means I might get 10% of its retail value from a total idiot, and lose something that provides me with free entertainment that would prevent me from being tempted to go out and spend money to keep myself from going nuts.

Food stamps help not only people in need but the economy as a whole. So of course Republicans would want to decimate the program. Oh I know, 3% of the people who get them don't really need them. That's an outrage. Put them in prison for ten years minimum and think of all the money we will save.

That made my head hurt.

That said, this conception that food stamps are manna from heaven and enable people to buy Lexuses and million-dollar mansions is insane. I conducted an experiment in 2008 and applied for food stamps through the PA apparatus... it was insanely difficult. I was ultimately rejected due to the income threshold (which I knew going in), but the reporting, recordkeeping, and compliance aspects are intense.

This man speaks the truth, but only part of it.

Do you think Walmart, Target, Meijer's, Fred Meyer's, Kroger, etc. is gonna let that shiat get cut?

Walmart alone will keep it from getting cut, because the get not just poor non-employees spending money there, but many of their employees depend on Food Stamps coupled with that discount they get.

Remember, the majority of people receiving food stamps are white trash and stupid as all get out. What we really need is a program to educate the recipients on how to make good choice with food stamps use. You will always have people who will abuse the generosity of the government and its citizens, but the decisions made by most poor (and rich) people are not bad, malevolent decisions, just stupid ones.

Just think how many people out there deny the existence of dinosaurs, or even better, accept the historical idea of dinosaurs in that they existed side by side with humans in Jesusland.

And yes, the number of smart phones in the hands of poor people is astounding and sad.

Where in the constitution does the federal government have the right to hand out food stamps to people? It doesn't seem to have much going for it in the way of interstate commerce since more impoverished 'swipe yo EBT' types don't leave the neighborhood they were born in...

The worst dipshiats would leave their groceries on the belt to run and stalk the stampers out in the parking lot and then loudly announce to everyone the make and year of their car. "That Lumina was at least a '98!!!"

Here is what is going down:

Basically the Republicans are trying to get farm subsidies paid out by insurance companies instead of the U.S. Government. This means, when different disasters strike farmers (which happens several times a year), we taxpayers pay out millions of dollars every year to farmers and land owners as a buffer against their losses. This is done so that we can sustain agriculture for the nation and not have massive price fluctuations in particular foods.

Anyway, we the taxpayers would then be on the line for the amount paid to insurance companies to subsidize their costs in selling crop insurance. This means we're no longer just paying farmers when they have problems; it means we'll be paying a premium to an insurance company who then can pay a farmer (*sarcasm* and we all know that insurance companies LOVE paying out money).

So to make up for paying out more money on premiums to insurance companies, for doing the job that the government is already doing effectively .... they are wanting to cut from the food stamp program.

TLDR version: We're taking money from the poor, to pay insurance companies to do something new, that the government already does well.
