When reporting on a forest fire, DO NOT wear protective gear, helmet, or goggles. That's "impersonating a firefighter" and you will be dealt with in a police-like manner

Um...

"Dunn said the deputies accused him of trying to impersonate a firefighter because he was wearing yellow, protective fire gear, a helmet, and goggles. Annual media training recommends wearing these clothes while covering wildfires."

Anyone can buy turnout gear.

If there's a fire around, using it is a good idea.

I think there's more to this story.

So, in the same vein, we should arrest those who wear a blue uniform and a badge and charge them with impersonating someone who swore to protect and serve the public.

So, that means knocking a 60 year old credentialed journalist to the ground and grinding him face in the gravel is an acceptable form of behavior in your book? How long since you retired from the Stasi, comrade?

At the wildfires in NC, the firefighters insisted you wear a nomex suit and hardhat if you wanted to tape/film on the other side of the fire line. One gave me a hardhat because I didn't have one.

I like where your head is at, but since they are generally wearing "tactical gear" and are armed, they should constitute an emanate threat to life or limb and "subdued" accordingly.

"Sheriff's office spokesman Deputy Armando Avina said the deputies used their discretion and did not arrest Dunn. He said because reports in the case have not been completed, he could not comment on the incident."

If they didn't arrest him for anything, wouldn't that make it assault?

Like the guy in North Carolina who submitted a request for a new traffic signal and was charged with impersonating an engineer because the request said why a traffic signal was justified. He got off on a technicality -- the "engineering" part of the request was unsigned and he refused to confess to writing it.

As many as you farking need to get something incredible.

Photojournalism is all about being in the right place at the right time. Often "the right place" is someplace the authorities would rather you weren't, and "the right time" is when dangerous shiat is going down.

Do you think the photographer who got that just showed up, snapped a few shots, and called it a day?

While no-one has to identify themselves as a journalist, perhaps taping "Press" in big black letters to the back of the protective gear would be advisable. Like journalists do with their flak jackets and vehicles in war zones. The police should apologize, though.

From the firefighter side, what about the colossal stupidity behind the statement about how photographers can't be ordered around an emergency scene, only advised?

Really?

I'm sure the newspaper's bottom feeding lawyer would be the first at the money trough if said photographer was injured as a result of getting too close to the fire. Hey, I'm all about letting Darwin separate the sheep, but at what point can we tell the press to get the fark out of the way then?

Let him burn, or get run over by a fire truck, and use him as a cautionary tale. But if you let every jackass with a fancy camera within the operations area of a wildfire, it's going to look likes squadron of Japanese tourist busses unloaded on the mountain.

To be fair, in an emergency situation when the police tell you to move, you need to move.

But yeah, that's what I'd generally call a disproportionate response. If he resisted the emergency personnel's directions long enough to merit a taser, then they should have filed charges. Arrest should, generally speaking, be a lower threshold than physical force.
