They should come with an optional propeller for these occasions. It would save a lot of time.

I have a 9 year old Echo that I let run almost completely out of oil last Friday. There was a terrible grinding noise and it sure sounded like engine bearings. I had the oil changed and took it to a mechanic. He determined the problem coincidentally was that the A/C compressor had failed. He bypassed the A/C put on new belts and plugs and the car runs and sounds like new again. Just no A/C. That is one tough little motor.

It's a diesel. The alternator will be fine once it dries out.

If you're the kind of person who expects you might do this, you're the kind of person who fits your vehicle with waterproofed electricals.

Guys in my unit in the National Guard tried this in the Nacimiento River with one of these:

www.davidpride.com

They got out in the stream, jammed a log into their roadwheels, and broke the final drive. Up until then, it had been a hoot. Now, they got stuck, had to swim to shore, and then walk 13 miles back to our bivouac site. THEN, they got to explain why they took their M-113 swimming, and how it came to flood. The next day, we took a tank retriever out and IT got stuck attempting to recover the armored personnel carrier. After three days, we finally got both the tank retriever and the APC home, with some saddened newly-made Privates.

Watching this video, I was always curious if it wouldn't have made more sense to actually let the water into the cab, have the truck hit the bottom of the water crossing, and just motor on, Then again, I've never tried crossing anything that deep. The deepest my stock 4Runner has gone is just above wheel wells.

That's exactly what should happen. He plowed into that stream way too fast, which let the back end float, which meant his wheels had no traction. He's just lucky, not skilled.

Hahahahaha... That's great. During Bradley Training I remember them really glossing over the whole amphibious thing. As the driver that scared the living sh*t out of me. I just imagined drowning in the hell-hole.

We went through a few rivers, without the protective barrier the f*cking thing leaks like a sieve. Though, driving it through the wash-rack after FTX was always a pleasure because you hadn't showered for 14 days and smelled like sh*t, feet, and death. I gladly took my sweet ass time chipping out all that Texas clay crap because the water was on full stream. Don't care what toxins it had in it. It was awesome.

I'll die from cancer anyway.

You got to see an 88 get stuck? I didn't think it was possible with that thing. I guess if you have enough mud, you gonna get anything stuck.

NewportBarGuy: You got to see an 88 get stuck?

It took TWO to get the first one out. And "there but for the grace of God, go I" never rang so true. The entire crew was friends of mine, and they invited me along. I had obligations, and dodged that bullet.

You're right about the mud. My brother was a Marine, and he was driving a Hummer, and his Platoon Leader questioned him why he didn't follow another HMMWV up a muddy bank, after a river crossing. He told his officer, "Well duh, he's gonna get stuck!" His officer said, "You can't get stuck in a Hummer, you dumbshiat!" And the leading Hummer immediately got stuck.

I have an ingenue at work. She's dating a kid at West Point. He's incredibly nice, but dumb as a rock. I hope for the sake of the Army he gets supply or logistics.

I was amazed at the quality difference in ROTC ossifers and their West Point counterparts. My last commander was a ring knocker. He was an absolutely brilliant commander and if he stayed in he could have made general no sweat. He got the hell out after 2 tours in Iraq. Aside from him, most of the Pointer sisters I had the displeasure to serve under were vastly inferior to their ROTC counterparts who at least did the college thing for 4-6 years in the semi-real world. The best platoon leader I ever saw was a guy who did his 3 years, got out, went to ROTC and did green to gold, or some variation of that... That guy was wired tight and knew his sh*t. Lt. Murphy. Too many to look up on the net, but if he stayed in and survived, I hope they advance him as high as they can.

No sh*t about getting stuck. Not only that, but the goddamn vehicles break down constantly. You spend half the time trying to keep them online. Hell, we all know we operate half the stuff with deadline deficiencies. I remember being out near Table 8 and wondering how in the f*ck C-17 got stuck in the only mudhole in the whole place. Bradleys are fun, but you've really gotta watch it with them. I loved the 113s because they were so much more agile to maneuver. Only got to drive one a few times. Don't even know why we had it.

'94 Xtra cab, 164,000, warped head/blown gasket, stuck valve. Still have it.

Wife insisted I buy a new truck. Got the Tacoma Access Cab... looks like a "large truck" compared to the old. Hate it. Probably just because my wife forced me to blow 20k on something I didn't want when 500 bucks would have gotten me back on the road.

NewportBarGuy: I have an ingenue at work.

Nice to look at, hard to talk to, Loudon Wainwright III has a great song about them

NewportBarGuy: I was amazed at the quality difference in ROTC ossifers and their West Point counterparts.

I couldn't agree more. The officer I most respect (Major Douglas Whiteside) once told me "I'd rather have a sister in a whorehouse, than a brother in West Point." He was my Platoon Leader when I was a Chinook Crew Chief. He once told me about flying in OH-58s as an instructor pilot at Fort Rucker "I'd wait until the student had the aircraft in trim. Then I'd open the door, and stick my leg out". Of course, the aircraft would then fly sideways. "I'd wait until the student recovered, and had the aircraft in trim again, and pull my leg back in again". Aircraft is flying sideways again...

I never got to play with the Bradleys. Were they really an improvement on the APC's? I used to drive those farkers HAAARD, until the crew would complain about scrambled brains. I almost died twice three times in APC's, but only once was I driving. Once, my Platoon Sergeant, (a dumbshiat) at the bottom of a long hill, and the start of a major uphill attempted to shift from 3-2 into 3-1, and missed the detent, and put it into reverse. As you know, tracked vehicles have a LOT of traction. We came to a complete stop in three feet, from 40 MPH. He stood that APC on it's nose. I had a premonition, and less than a minute before, had fastened my steel pot's chinstrap. I put a 2-inch dent in my helmet when I hit the machinegun mount with my head.

The second time, we were in Minnesota for cold-weather training, and I was asleep on all of our squad TO&E, in the middle of the night, and we went off an embankment at 30-MPH, and straight down a hill into a swamp. I grabbed a ceiling strap, and hung on. When we came to a stop, I immediately went back to sleep. Then I felt a tap on my helmet, and my Squad Leader asked me, "Hey, do you wanna drive? Dan (who was driving with the old trigger-mittens on, and had locked a brake) don't wanna anymore."

The third time, we were in a convoy bring our vehicles back for turn-in, and we broke down. We (my driver and I) spent the night in the APC, and they repaired us the next morning. Without the train to follow, and no instructions, we got lost and ended up on the FMC testing grounds for APC's. It was deserted, and we were on a promontory, and could SEE the depot, so we headed down a trail. It got steeper and steeper, and eventually, I made my driver get out and walk. I took that downhill trail by myself, at about 1/8-MPH. I've never been so scared, because the APC wanted to flip end-over-end. I got to the bottom, and they had posted: "This trail is for UPHILL TRAFFIC ONLY!" It would have been nice if that sign was at the top.

Want to kill a Toyota? Don't change the antifreeze yearly, don't keep it washed. It'll rot and disappear right before your eyes.

Then there must be something wrong with my eyes.
I've got one of those early "swagger wagons" (aka minivan) which is closing in on 300000 miles. It's been in the family ever since day one, which was about 14 years ago. Total spent on repairs so far is still less than $1k.
Oil change every 5k miles, brakes and tires when needed.
Barely any rust on it, and the anti-freeze was changed about 4 years ago with the new radiator. Took it cross country less than 6 months ago and would do it again in an instant.
As for Dodge, well I bought one of them thar minivans brandnew in '97 and dumped it a year later with 52k miles on it, after pretty much everything had been worked on.

/I know, it's all anecdotal.

UNAUTHORIZED FINGER: Were they really an improvement on the APC's?

Improvement? Well... It has a nice big gun, can maneuver pretty damn well in cities if you have a good driver. The biggest thing is more armor. It can stop more rounds than the 113 can, but not much. RPGs and IEDs can effectively knock them out like all track vehicles and through armor penetration.

I liked it. I'd use it as a daily commuter if I had the money and the state would allow me. Crushing cars was pretty fun. The TC always got nervous thinking I'd break track. Never did, not a single time.

heh... I really love this... Evolution of the Bradley

Incidentally, I forget who told me this, but they said: "If you ever have to get on a Sh*thook, make sure you can see it leaking hydraulic fluid. Because, if it ain't, it's probably out."

NewportBarGuy: RPGs and IEDs can effectively knock them out like all track vehicles and through armor penetration.

Well Willie and Joe even knew about that from WWII. Joe: "Moving foxholes attract attention".

tytempletonart.files.wordpress.com

Also, your comment on the shiathooks was truly valid when I was a crewmember, but from the D-model on, all the components are modularized, so now you have to make sure that hydraulic fluid is dripping from SEVEN DIFFERENT SOURCES, or you may be out (actually my aircraft, 68-15853 a Viet Nam veteran, with the bullet-holes to prove it, has been rebuilt and is flying in Afghanistan as aircraft 90-00210, bless her JP-4 powered heart).

//officers thought that meant "AIR-CAN-DO"
///my crew knew it meant "AIR-CANNABIS"

I think you're just being mean and not reading between the lines. My family has had many other cars, including Dodge, Ford, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Chevy, GMC, Olds, and Pontiac. The Toyotas are consistently cheap to keep running.

And my list of cars clearly telegraphs I was upgrading until the Camry, which I hope to get 300,000 out of, unless the kids trash it when they get the licences.

My only point was consistency. Everyone has the fluke car that keeps going and going.
