That vid needs some more build up/info.

For instance, how did he save the children? That would be interesting to know.

Also, Subby wasn't kidding about the dust. I teared up when all those people stood up, and more when I read the Wikipedia article. Yikes.

There have been some pretty lame uses of the HERO tag on FARK lately.

This is not one of them.

Now THIS is what the Hero tag is for. Not for the majority of the uses around here, this man is a hero & if it were a just world his name would be as well known as the 'heroes' who do nothing more than hit/chase/carry/shoot some sort of ball around a playing field.

/thanks Subby, not sure how you knew about the dust in my house but thanks anyway
//glad Mr. Winton is still with us as well. Long may he live, he deserves at least a year for each child rescued.

Here's about a 10 min segment on his story/life at YouTube. Lots of other clips off to the right too.

/watching these beats the hell of the Lost rerun that the rest of the family is engrossed in....

While what he did was definitely commendable I was underwhelmed by the wimp video and had to look it up on Wiki after it popped up on my Facebook.

If you want a real tearjerker story from Wimp, try this video on for size: WWII widow finally finds out what happened to her missing husband. (pops)

Same here. I'd never heard about this man before. What a story. The most heartbreaking part of the story -- for me, at least -- was how the last group of 250 children was turned back when the war started. We might never know what became of them.

Don't be daft. You're 42. I'm 45. I restarted my life a couple of years ago (when I was your age), went back and became a police officer. You're never to old to do the things you want to do with your life.

I'm not as moved. She knew he was gone; what was she holding out for? Many more widows lost their loved ones and never got the benefit of a granite headstone.

it's truly amazing how strong some British born men could be back then..

Now.. you can't buy a knife unless your over 18, and starter pistols are BANNED for fear of scaring the precious little butterflies.

I take it you didn't get to the end of he video, heh?

Sorry, but when you see an entire village still paying respects to a man 60 years later - you gotta tear up a little.

So you took the job of the men whose job it was to round up said children. A job with a long "proud" history of murder, rape and oppression (and that's on its good days). You chose poorly.
