Yeah they can. Actually, they're pretty good at it.

When I was a little kid I visited the Myriad Gardens in Oklahoma City.

I picked a flower I thought was pretty and a lady who worked there saw me do it.

Instead of scolding me she simple asked, "What would happen if everyone did that?" I said, "there would be no flowers left."

I knew more by the age of 6 than Romney will ever know.

The tragedy of the commons is the best way to explain how a free market can't work. Without regulation, with everyone working in their own self-interest, the system will fail.

Well, depends on your definition of fail. The very small number of people who become ex-farking-tremely wealthy would probably assess the system as "working perfectly."

Look - here's the story on Bain Capital. They were in the business of making money. They made money in any way possible. If saving a company made them money, they saved money. If destroying that company made them money, they destroyed it. If hiring people made money, they hired. If firing people made money, they fired. It is quintessential capitalism. No care for people, products, companies, or anything other than profits.

So how long are we going to continue to be shocked to learn about different practices Bain used to make profits?

Bain isn't working ............for anyone other than the few rich beneficiaries that own the operation. The layoffs, bankruptcies and ruining the livelihoods of numerous small towns and the honest folk who live there seems to have worked quite well for them.

Because more and more, this election looks like a referendum on those business practices. I don't know if this is cause or effect, but you can almost break down the Obama/Romney split by asking the question "Do you believe that a corporation and its leadership should have a conscience?"

The Romney/Bain/businesspeoples' answer is "Of course not, plebe. Businesses exist to make money; if we didn't do it, someone else would; why do you hate Free Markets/America/capitalism; I bet you'd rather go back to a barter system."

The Obama answer is "Yes, comrade. Businesses employ people, and the actions of businesses affect both them and the surrounding and supporting communities. These entities must be held accountable to and by those communities."

I think a good way for Romney to confront claims of "vulture capitalism" would be to expand on the metaphor. Unfortunately for him he isn't talented enough to pull it off.

It's not that they made profits. It's that Romney claims to have created jobs for Americans. Which is objectively a falsehood.

Bain had them ready to be sold as soon as the first loan was given to the suckers. I'm sure their great minds had mapped out the blow by blow deals already. They knew the exact moment employee pensions would be raided and had the new contracts for the Chinese overlords ready on the same day. When Romney speaks of making things efficient and trimming costs, selling off businesses was where Bain took fast and made it faster. Local economies must have really took a big hit. Imagine this happening to little towns throughout America. What about the side businesses providing supplies to the factories and businesses? They were collateral damage, but killed off by Bain just the same. I'm sure there were 2 -3 of such places per sold business. The only plus side would be Romney's extensive background in dealing with the Chinese. But, do we want a President who would preside over a fire sale of jobs?

That's kind of what I meant. Render it in its most generic terms, focusing on the process of recycling raw materials to promote new growth, etc. etc. Depersonalize. Work up a good narrative, get people to understand that while it might not be pretty, the system as a whole would die without them. Then at the very end, punctuate it succinctly by saying, "And this is the role Bain plays." It would distract from the very personal realities of job losses created in the process.

A talented rhetorician might be able to pull it off.

American companies have been exporting jobs under both Democratic and Republican administrations and congresses for well over a generation. The only thing that has slowed it down is the weakening dollar.

It's correct to criticize Romney for his part in the process, but it's disingenuous to pretend Obama or Clinton has done anything to prevent it.

The issue at hand is that Romney will run the country with the experience that he learned at Bain. So, as you say, "No care for people, products, companies, or anything other than profits," and I am fairly certain that the profits that he cares about are not mine or yours.

All of the things that he would ruin without a second thought if it was in the path to profit? Those things are ours, and I do not trust him with them.

While Driving my sister cross country to go to Colorado for college, my little sister was in the back eating sunflower seeds and tossed a few of the husks out the window. Whereupon my older sister turned to her and said "can you imagine what would happen if everybody tossed thier husk out the window like that, do you know how many there woul dbe on the side of the road in a year?"

The she looked out at the desolate stretch of Nebraska Highway we were driving on and conceeded "okay like maybe six or seven, but that's not the point"

The new free trade agreements signed since O-Bomb took office are actually bandied about on these boards as signs of his successes since taking office. "Look how pro-business he is!" is not a selling point as far as I'm concerned. The only positive on the labor front that I've seen in the last few years is that some companies have repatriated because shipping costs are becoming too astronomical to bear given the cost of oil consistently rising. So I guess that's good, unless you consider the flip side, that as more capital is sucked out of the market by the big oil companies your average consumer has less to spend. So you're seeing reduced demand and smaller factories. So, essentially, worldwide output is stalling, demand is down, but at least we get 1/3 of the jobs back that were originally sent overseas. The other two jobs are gone forever; the fallout is represented best by the unemployed man in Ohio and a starving man in China. Glory be upon the new normal.
