Well, the problem is obvious: they're using self-reported numbers. And with men tending to inflate their numbers, and women deflating them, the overall coming out as men having 3x as many partners is really not very surprising. It doesn't mean the media is sexist (although bad at math is likely), it just means people lie about sex. A lot.

Can't count how many women I've slept with.. Lost count at the age of 30 and i'm well past the count of 100. But i've always gone with the low hanging fruit.. That girl in a group of 5 that I know I can bang. I could easily see the statistic being reliable as only certain women sleep around where most men will have a hard time saying no to free bootie. Though a large portion of men have no idea how to get a woman into bed so that offsets guys like me who get to "make the rounds" as it were.

Do you believe that there are fewer men than women in the population? That these values are medians rather than means? That the pool of responses is biased across gender? This still would not make the difference. I see others have explained the failure which is you to you. I will not go further on this.

Evolutionary psychologists have examined how many individuals people desire to have in the lifetime of them. The means are way different such that this is close to 7 to 1 or so. The medians are actually quite close the same. I just had blood work done because I'm getting to be an old farker and doctors want to do that too me every year. Anyways my liver still shows up as normal. WTF! Doctor says he's seen many 20 year olds less healthy than me. My current GF by the way is 23 ;)

But a mathematician will tell you there are also things called "Modes" and "Medians" both of which are types of "averages" as typically used by human being, and it IS possible for the mode and median of men's sexual partners to be different than that of woman.

Mode basically means the number that most people have. That is, if most men have 3 partners, but a few have none and some have 1000, the mode is still 3. Women could easily have a mode of 2 and men could have a mode of 5. Or vice versa.

Median is effectively the number that half have more and half have less.

That is, it is possible for half of all men have more than 4 partners and half have less, while simultaneously half of all women have more than 2 partners and half have less.

The article does report the medians for both men and women. Since they report sex partners, I suspect the gay male population skews the results. I lived in the SF Bay area for a decade. If the live styles several of my gay friends were any indication (and even within a close order of magnitude of the truth), it wasn't unusual for them to have sex with more partners in a month than I'd had in my life. Every encounter is 2x in the guy column and zero in the female.
