That makes no sense since the games have been on at most 4 hours or so a day. I've seen every game and haven't missed any sleep or work.

"Because of the time difference, he reportedly stayed up each night with friends and then went to work the following day."

Did he stay awake longer than 264 hours? If so, he's a record holder. Guinness world book of records should seek to verify this.

If you RTFA, you would have seen that games are in the middle of the night there and he went to work during the day.

I'd say "yeah, been there", except I didn't farking die.

Though, to be fair, there's really just a flat-out major element of luck in not dying as a human in any given endeavor. Take things like "falling down", for instance. There are people that have jumped repeatedly off the tenth floor of a building without so much as a scratch, and there are people that have tripped over a crack in the sidewalk, fallen literally zero feet, and died.

Biology has at best a nodding acquaintance with physics, basically. I'm not surprised by anything anymore.

//Disclaimer: 3/4 of a bottle of scotch and whatever was left of my gin earlier, this may or may not be on topic. And thanks to an awesome dude that will remain anonymous, you probably paid at least half a second of attention to this due to the totalFark tag. Joke's on you, hypothetical dude I randomly made up.

Probably pretty close to that. When I was in purchasing I had an overseas vendor in China, and you could expect an prompt answer to an email you sent them at almost any time. Same with the main overseas vendor in Thailand. Those bastards seemed to never sleep.

DVR, dude. Or just pick out the English and French games and sleep through the rest.

I mean, I've been through the ungodly-hour time difference problem too, most recently with the early games in the 2010 World Cup. For that, I got up early for some of those games and just ended up drifting back to sleep. It wasn't gonna happen.

And that's to say nothing of any live event held in Japan or South Korea. Good luck.

Luckily, when something's held at that criminal an hour, the host networks in America are pretty good about re-airing the game at a more reasonable hour, typically late morning or early afternoon.

Seriously.

I knew of someone who jumped off a 14 story building and didn't die. I also knew someone who tripped on a sidewalk and died the next day. It's luck of the draw and nothing else.

I can maybe help you with this one:

Actual lack of sleep in itself won't generally physically harm you if everything else is running fine. What it _can_ do is exaggerate other shiat that's already wrong with you like any other source of major stress.

For instance, if you're the type of pathological couch potato that spends all day at a job sitting by the phone and then spends all your free time watching foreign sports on TV, you probably have some typical health issues that make adding sleep deprivation to the pile a bad idea.

If the dude did eleven all-nighters in a row to make room for his marathon-running hobby instead of his slowly-dying-of-cardiac-disease-while- absorbing-stupid-passive-enterta inment hobby he'd probably still be running 25-mile circles around us today, is what I'm saying here.

//Though, again, there is the aforementioned element of luck in anything health-related. Just saying he could have potentially tilted the statistics a bit more in his favor by not being a worthless person.

The fu...? Yeah it most certainly can and does when you prolong it enormously like this guy did. Look up nearly anything on extended sleep dep and they'll be happy to list it for you. Admittedly, the more serious mental effects will come on sooner than the more serious physical effects - but oh gods yes it'll mess you up, and not just your thinking.

Perhaps the problem here is distinguishing between doable/done stuff like 3 days or so, done that myself although I'm told I collapsed at about 71 hours, literally just went from walking to a boneless sleeping heap on the floor - and extended long term complete or near complete lack of sleep like this guy was doing. (Key caveat here - when I did that to myself there were no drugs involved, not even caffeine/sugar as I was on a water only to drink kick at that age - just me being stupid at my first game convention. Obviously with the right pharmaceuticals you could push it a lot further.)

Long duration continuous or nearly continuous lack of sleep is very much physically harmful - and sure you can die from it just as easily as you can from anything else harmful - hell more easily cause your brain is a frickin' mess just to add to the fun.

I doubt it's possible to actually go 11 days without sleep. He may have had very little sleep over 11 days, but if I'm tired enough, I'll just fall asleep. Unless, or course, he was taking stimulants to stay awake when he was with his friends and then drinking at night(Even then he probably slept some) You know what doesn't mix well? Alchohol and pills.
