I have no idea what a FIB is, but the NYTimes let that out of the bag years ago when their writers were too damn lazy and just started writing about Traverse because it was right by their summer house anyway.

It was a huge, fat-as-fark raccoon that was barely able to waddle down the end of the walkway, only to turn and look at me as if to say "Can't I just go back for that last piece of rancid chicken?"

I chased him off with an ice scraper.

River Rouge Park is 1,184 acres, I'm guessing that's where they let Rocky Jr. loose.


CSB: A couple of times in the past month I've heard someone or something skulking on our back deck while Mr. Ouisch and I were sitting in the family room watching TV. He always said "I don't hear anything" but finally a few nights ago I insisted that I heard some kind of "clunk" noise. He got up, turned on the outside lights and peeked out the window. "Come here," he said to me in a hushed tone. I joined him at the window and saw an enormous raccoon waddling on the railing along the deck. Dunno how he made the "clunk" noise, maybe that was his (or maybe "her" - coulda been a pregnant female) fat butt trying to clamber up onto the railing.

If you enjoy history, Dearborn has the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Greenfield was the destination of one or two memorable field trips for me in grade school, and I have fond memories of seeing Edison's lab and the Wright Brothers' bicycle shop.

Lake Huron has some beautiful beaches. I'm most familiar with the shore up north near Rogers City, which is a quiet town, but pleasant. The beaches of Lake Huron can be quite rocky, so I'd recommend wearing water shoes instead of going barefoot. You can find some interesting fossils there -- okay, mostly coral -- if you enjoy that sort of thing.

Of course you can go to Mackinaw City. Bit of a tourist trap, but from there you can cross the Bridge to the Upper Peninsula, and/or take a ferry to Mackinac Island. Also a bit of a tourist trap, but an historical one, at least. If you're outdoorsy, look into touring the UP, though!

Dearborn Heights extends on both sides of Telegraph just north of 94. Van Born rd. The historic Dearborn district is north of Michigan, west of Telegraph. My SO's grandparents live in the former, my aunt and 7 other family members (in two houses) in the latter.

I've actually met some lovely people from the GPs, but I usually meet them at things like volunteer events because they're fully aware they've got it good and that it usually takes some luck along with hard work to get there. Or you know, family money. So they give back what they can. I've also met plenty of trust fund jackasses at school who were absolutely unbearable. But they'll be set for life, so no worries.

Your 'class' is not mine. A neighborhood where people take pride in themselves, their families, their homes, and have a honest sense of community where they help each other out whenever needed - that's the definition of class to me. And the size of the house or proximity to the lake doesn't mean a goddamn thing.

A^2 does get quiet in the summer (I loved living there year around as the rest of the students went back home). Lazy days reading in the Arb, Kayaking at Gallup Park. Art Fair is fun if you like to people watch and shop. Just don't try to drive through two (same as any game day at the Big House)

Mackinac Island, Fudge shops, bridge trip, & pastys up north. A little of the crazy Yooper humor is fun if you can find a local band (my dad's dating a Yooper and her family is a riot in small doses, but I don't think I could take them up on a full week invite)

If you come to the west side, there's always the beaches. Every weekend one of the little towns around GR has their summer festival/old fashioned fair days. We have concerts downtown indoors or out (Rosa Parks circle is usually busy), Microbreweries are down the block. There's also music and art at Meijer Gardens and Art Prize is starts Sept 19 for 2 weeks of snooping in downtown in buildings I would never enter otherwise. It's like a treasure hunt for the best work.

Autumn is usually my favorite time for outdoor parties but due to the bad spring the fruit growers lost 80%+ of their crops. The fall harvest festivals might be a bummer but I hope not.

Check out the bars and shops in Royal Oak.
Mexican Village has a lot of great restaurants, my favorite is Xochimilcos at 23 and Bagley, by the Ambassador bridge.
Bike Woodward from Birmingham to Ferndale, hit a few bars along the way.
