When my Aunt had a turtle and would let it play in the front yard she just stuck a suction cup flag and placed it on the turtles shell. You could tell where he was, even in the long grass, because there was a tiny red flag with spaceship on it poking out of the grass.

When my same aunt had a gerbil (or hamster, I have no idea) and would let it play in the front yard we just set up a barriers. The barriers didn't help it though when a giant crow (or hamster, I have no idea) came and picked it up.

It terrified me as a kid and I always thought that if we put the flag on the hamster that the crow wouldn't have taken it, because the turtle never got taken. . .

/had a flag on my bike so the crows couldn't get me
//kid logic

From such beliefs are religions born.

I find it seriously amusing that this turtle is older than I am. I turn 43 tomorrow.

And, from what I gather, it could easily outlive every last person reading this by a clean 70 more years.

Sulcata owner here: Check in the bushes nearby! They'll take cover and stay for days!

/Also, people will steal them.
//Hope it's in the bushes.

There's good eating in one of those.

I had my iguana, Spot, run away for two months last year. The new girlfriend put an ad on craigslist... long story short some guy with a lawnmower scared him up out of a tree, he was caught, someone found our ad and he was returned to us safely! I'd love to know what he did during those two months.

So put up a craigslist ad, refresh it every week or so and keep your fingers crossed

That was a freakin' adorable story. Except the part about the gerbil or hamster.

I saw a chick get picked up by a hawk once. I was an adult. It was still freaking awful. But hey, my friend finally finished properly building the goddamn coop I was trying to get him to finish after that. So, that was a plus.

Apparently hotlinked from a Farker's Turtle website? Or former one at least. So props are due. I guess.

I did some carpentry work at a house that had a pet tortoise. African spurred tortoise. His name was Mr. Speedy. LOL. He was very cool, extremely acclimated to people. When you entered the back yard, from wherever he was, he'd come a trotting to see who it was. Surprisingly sprite, while not pocket dog hyper, he could move at a good clip. Very steady, LOL. Loved to have his head petted. Ate fruits and veggies. The wife of the household was a science teacher at a local academy, where the tortoise spent the school year. Summers he spent at their house, where I met him. It was 10 years old at the time. One day, I'm out in the yard, talking with the husband of the household, hanging with Mr. Speedy. We were talking about him and that's when I found out how old it was.

me: "Geez, he's only 10, huh? It's amazing. He's probably going to outlive me by a good hundred years if he lives to his normal 150, and if I live to be 90."

him: after a brief quiet spell "You know? I had not even thought about that. I'm going to have to make a provision for him in my will."

Parrots are the same way. The couple that used to be my parents' friends have both passed, well into their 80s and early 90s, and the parrot they had that I remember as a small child is still alive and going strong, probably for another 30 or more years. Their daughter has it now.

A friend's tortoise escaped through a broken gate. It took them 6 months to realize she wasn't hibernating, she was gone.

They got her back by putting up flyers all over the neighborhood.

She'd made it several miles away because she was picked up by folks visiting a neighbor as she was crossing the street. The neighbors saw a flyer in their church, and told their friends whose tortoise they had picked up.

The tortoise is back home now -- although not really home since she was stolen as a baby from the desert.

CSB?

Marching around in search of a sunnier spot to eat, drink, and be merry is basically about all turtles and tortoises do when they're not basking in the sun. Trying to keep them in one place is an exercise in frustration, and they sure as hell never appreciate you keeping them out of the road for their own good, either..
