The grieving mother then showed the judge the many bills she's had to pay, even though her son was not at fault.

Yea, you're right. This is just wrong.

The person who killed him is an illegal immigrant sentenced to 17 years in prison. What are the odds they'll ever get anything out of her?

It would be interesting to know what city politician came up with this process, who on the city counsel approved it and what morons thought it was a right good idea in the first place?

Then, once found out, track them down and bull whip them.

I've never heard of anything like this. EVER! Around here, all of that is covered in the taxes we pay. It's part of the city and county's job.

That's like sending a bill to a home owner whose home burned down, for the use of the fire department or for the water used to put it out.

These people are jacka$$es.

But unless her son's estate has a positive net worth, can't she just ignore any bills/debts against it?

Right - Even Red China used to charge the families of executed "criminals" for the bullets. So, what, we're gonna be more socialist than China?

They aren't the only place trying to profit from misfortunes. One of our local cities here in california is now charging drivers for responding to accidents. I'm not talking about a cleanup bill or towing fees, but actually charging you $500+ because you had an accident in their town, slated to cover 'expenses'.

Now I could be wrong, but didn't the taxpayers already fork out the cash for all of the people and equipment that are needed to cover the expenses of a cleanup?

Yup. A detail she didn't mention either. She can just throw them away unless her son had a lot of assets, which at his age is unlikely.

We areb paying for city workers retirement now because there isn't enough money to cover wages + retirement.

South Carolina is a shiat hole. Almost everyone in the state is on some kind of aid, be it disability , SSI etc. They were freaked out 2 years ago when the government was going to freeze payments while passing the budget, because the whole shiatty state would've been out of money. My point, those assholes don't pay a cent in taxes and that's why shiat like this happens, no money for services.

Well, she did mention the bill came addressed to her son. However, I don't even think the fact that he died is the cornerstone of the outrage. IMO it would be just as unacceptable to bill a surviving crash victim for the cost of cleaning up their blood.

victims getting screwed is nothing new. law in usa was built protecting those with wealth and power. to punish, not to rehabilitate or right wrongs. it heaps insult (or expense, or other inconvenience) on top of injury or death.

All in the name of budget cutting. Or revenue generation.

What that means is "we spend too much and don't want to get booted out of office for A. cutting expenses and services or B. Raising taxes"

/what it REALLY means is that my wifes cousins hubby needs a kickback, and you've been chosen to give it to him

I am getting a feeling that this something like Comcast sending you a bill for the receiver boxes after your house burns down...Because you are just supposed to send those along to your insurance.

Yeah, it seems somewhat crass and offensive, but the local government needs to keep a balance sheet as well. I am not defending the city here, it seems they have a weird accounting system...but rather than the city deal with insurance companies, they have this system in place, bill folks directly so their insurance/estate can handle whatever needs to be handled.

Frederick County, MD does exactly this. Fire dept will also send you a bill when you dial 911 for a medical emergency ($678), even if an ambulance is also dispatched. Good luck getting insurance to pay for a bill from the fire dept.

Like most red states, they just don't believe the state should collect sufficient taxes in order to provide services to the tax payer, services such as motor vehicle accident cleanup.

In other words, in the real world, this is what being boootstrappy means.

My old FD in Texas would send a bill if you didn't have a "subscription". But then again, the dept didn't receive a single dime in tax money and ran strictly on subscriptions and donations. Medical/EMS was run by the county with county tax dollars and they'd still send you a bill. Hell, I got a bill from them when they had to cart me off a fire scene because my kidney decided that it was an appropriate time to eject a stone, so there's no love lost at all for the billing folks.

I don't see how she has to pay anything, unless the car was registered in her name. If she means they are billing her son's estate then she is a liar by saying she has to pay. People may donate money to help her when she is presenting the situation in a false light.

Some stuff, like keeping the car in storage in case there is a trial, sounds optional, like she chose to do it. She didn't have to do it.

I am thinking it is along these lines of logic, although it might have been a private company that did the clean up. One of those crime scene cleaning companies like they had a show about. I don't remember title or channel however I would guess one of those guys who got called out. They probably put the bill in the deceased's persons name because they got the name and address from his registration at the scene.
