Encouraging Floridians to catch venomous lionfish, or hunt huge pythons or aggressive boars, is a win-win situation.

I actually see this article as a good thing both for and about Florida, and as a good example for other states with edible invasive species. If it's edible and invasive, we should be eating the fark out of it. Boar is DAMN good. If python is anything like rattlesnake, it'll be pretty tasty too. Never had lionfish, so I can't comment there.

I don't know if there is a lot of commercial demand for any of these, but the hunting/fishing regulations are pretty lax for all of them.

For wild pigs/boars you don't even need a hunting permit if you are on private land, and there is no season limit or bag limit. For public land you need a hunting license, but the approved season is most of the year.

For pythons you don't need a hunting license for private land and there is no bag limit, but you do need to sign up for the python hunting program if you want to catch them in the everglades.

For lionfish all you need is a recreational fishing license and you can catch up to 100lbs.

They could put a bounty on each python, say 10 or 20 bucks. Within a few years, the population would go Passenger Pigeon or American Bison. Ditto with pretty much any invasive species. If unemployed high school kids could go out and collect hundreds of dollars in bounties every week, it would help the local economy too.

Many landowners will allow hunters free access to their land to hunt wild hogs. The wild hogs are a nuisance that destroy crops, harass livestock (and sometimes eat the young), and chase out native game species. It's a win-win for the landowners and the hunters - the hunters get free access to a mostly unregulated hunting environment, and the landowners get free removal of a pest species.

Someone has to bring some money to your economy.

Have hunted hogs locally when I was in high school. Now i prefer to let the kids do it and reap the rewards. The trick is to catch them live, and put them in a pen. Feed them corn for about 6 months then voila tasty ribs, etc in the smoker. I've got friends who supply local charity events with them. As far as lionfish it is my understanding that the best way to catch them is to spear them. They may or may not bite on regular bottom fishing gear. Pythons, no clue. I live north of the everglades. This event sounds cool, wish I could get down there.

Ecosystems evolve over millenia, and Florida's hasn't had time to adapt especially with the increased impact of humans and development. There are some natural predators to the wild hogs in FL like alligators, panthers, and bears, but all of those have been pushed farther and farther away by the encroach of civilization. Florida Panthers have become endangered and tend to avoid people as it is, and people freak out when large alligators and bears start wandering into their neighborhoods, so wildlife control has to take them out, while the hogs merrily hang out and keep causing trouble.
