If you have to call the police because there is a chicken in your yard you really need to rethink your life.

Was it a rooster? Those things are vicious. I wouldn't be stepping outside my door if there was a rooster going all 'cock of the walk' on my lawn.

There but for the reasonable use of 911 go I. When I was in middle school, my step father brought a chicken home that he caught running around at work. No one informed me as to its presence and when I got home it jumped up to the window sill and stared at me for some time. I was more than a bit freaked out, and instead of the police, because I am not a complete idiot, I called a friend of mine and said "hypothetically, what would you do if there were a chicken on your window sill staring at you?" She laughed, of course, so I said "... okay, no more hypotheticals. There's a chicken on my window sill staring at me." At which point she laughed harder and offered no useful advice. It stared at me for 3 hours until my mom comes home and fills me in as to the fact that we have a chicken now. That chicken turned out to be one of the coolest pets I ever had. She was super loyal and affectionate, she'd even come running up to greet us with our dogs when we came home. That chicken was a good pal. Free eggs didn't hurt either.

Calling 911 =/= calling the police
TFA does not say he called 911 -- it says he called the police. 911 is for emergencies, but you can also call your local precinct in a non-emergency. You'll speak to the desk sergeant, most likely.
As a domestic animal, the chicken should be treated as property. If you saw a purse in your yard that wasn't yours, you should call the local precinct then, too -- but not 911.

Plettschner: It's none of your business. You want to be a hero? Or would you rather be a chicken man?

Otto: What?

Plettschner: A chicken man. Did you ever see a farmer's wife? Huh?

Otto: Let go of me!

[Plettschner: It's peaceful man.]

Just saw this on 'Dirty Jobs'....there are wild chickens in Florida.

They can sort of fly in wing extended hops, are not as dumb as their factory managed relatives and are a challenge to catch.

All I want to add is that there is a helmeted guinea fowl wandering around my neighborhood, but I've never called the police when it has been in my yard.

I don't know about his city but in some places 911 is the catch all number for the police. You're suppose to call it for anything police/fire/medical related, not just emergencies. This screws things up for people when they are use to that and then move to town where it is only for emergencies. It seems weird but the major I asked said they did it like that because people are really bad at determining what is and isn't an emergency so you have people on 911 for a chicken in the yard while another person is thumbing through the phone book looking for the non-emergency number after a break in. It's easier for the trained 911 operator to determine who should be notified than leaving that judgement to the hundreds of thousands of unique and quirky people who make up the public.

No, I stole it from someone in this thread.

Both threads just happened to be posted in the same 24 hour span, and the pic fit the subject matter here, and I remembered it.

The origins of it are unknown to me. Maybe the other guy knows.

Waste of police resources. Good job, idiot.

The homeowners needs to learn how to take care of business. Next time someone intrudes on your property go grab your shotgun, M16 or flamethrower and take care of it. Or if the intruder is a chicken and you want something edible left over, use a pellet gun. That is what I would have done. Made a nice tasty dinner out of it.

My parents had that in St Louis back in the 70s. They looked out in the back yard and there were 3 of them. They called animal control and it took a few hours for a group of guys to get them in the August heat. It might not have been a 102 F day with 102% humidity but it probably felt like it.

The fact that people without license to act in emergency situations could be sent to jail if they try to handle it themselves.

/what if the chicken was an endangered species?
//people should have never encroached upon the noble wild chickens' territory, they're so beautiful and smarter than domesticated animals
