Bob Lobel had the best job of all time - he did his job the way he wanted - always kept it light and fun, although I've heard he's not so nice in person. Supposedly a drinker.

One other fun note, this was a local late-night Boston sports week wrap-up. That format was brought to Boston by a guy named Bob Gamere (on WLVI-TV Channel 56). I didn't have cable and don't even know if Sports Center and ESPN were anything worth watching at that time. Gamere was as big a drunk as there was, and every local female who ever went to a bar had a story about (him) 'some creepy guy from TV saying things to me'.
May have been a jerk, but he brought some good sports TV to Boston, and this interview may have been the pinnacle.
/perhaps Bob Ryan saying he was going to smack Jason Kidd's wife was a close second.

Met Ted Williams at spring training as a kid. He was an asshole for the most part, but he did sign my hat. It's the only autograph out of hundreds I wish I still had.

I'm sorry, did you say "supposedly?" LOL My dad worked the phone systems for WBZ - Bob had more than one bottle on his desk, at the ready. But, I've met him and he is a good natured, genuinely funny guy.

When Ted got back from the war, he used to come to my hometown in western MA to fly an airplane. He took my Dad up one time for a flight. My dad also was in the Navy and got to make mouthguards for the Navy quarterbacks so he met Roger Staubach. In the late 70's, early 80's he was getting a degree at Texas A & I University and used to tutor Daryl Greene at our dining room table.

My interaction with sporting greats, none. But I did hang out with Allan Pinkett one night at charity event so I got that going for me. Nice guy.

Considering at that time John Hannah was still considered one of the best offensive linemen of all time it's a miss. But since Hannah didn't win any rings it's a small miss.
And other than Hannah, there's really no other Patriot you hold in much regard until the1996 team (after the linked interview). And on top of that, when you talk champions and local Patriots legends, no one belongs at the Bird/Orr/WIlliams/Russell table other than Brady. I'd take Cousy or Havlicek or Pedro Martinez before I pick my next Patriot. Maybe a couple of others. And I don't even know who my next NFL legend/Patriot is. Maybe too soon, but it's probably Wilfork after these last few seasons.
Part of that is that pitching and basketball lend themselves to allowing an individual to dominate a game, whereas football in the time of good Patriots, the game is more team oriented. The only individually dominant players the Pats have had that require major game planning are/were Brady, Wilfork, and Randy Moss. Everyone else is a very good and very consistent soldier.

You also have to remember that in Boston, football was obscure. At that time, a kid wanted to be a hockey player, a baseball player, and you could still grasp at straws to be white and play basketball.

Flutie put football on the radar at that time. Football was insignificant. Hell, my uncle almost became owner of the Pats through stadium alcohol licensing. The asking price wasn't much either.
