List fails without King Harvest's one hit wonder that everybody and I mean EVERYBODY thinks is by Van Morrison.

When I first heard Stealers Wheel's Stuck in the Middle with You, I thought it was by Bob Dylan.

Huh.

Who is making all those videos with the wrong artist info? Does it go back to the miss-tagged limewire and napster mp3s? I used to think people did that as a joke.

There was another Cracked article which says that the song is basically making fun of Dylan's style and singing, and that people don't get the joke anymore.

Yep, I bet so! No... this list was pretty good. I could see people thinking such and being too lazy to google it.

Another one, for those of you growing up in the early 80s who listened to country:

"Louisiana Saturday Night" is not by Alabama.

I doubt many people know that Blinded By the Light is by Bruce Springsteen either, or that Bob Dylan wrote All Along The Watchtower.

Well, the former... another band made it a much bigger hit, so that's fair.

The Bob Dylan one... that's just stupid. Even Bob admit's Jimi's version is the best, but to not know? Sigh!

Most of the examples in the article (outside of ELO and The Hollies) was songs by bands/performers that were mostly one hit wonders, so, it isn't surprising that people thing someone they have actually heard of sung it, and even with ELO and The Hollies, the songs are 20+ years later getting attributed to bands that have more current pop culture relevance than them (Beatles and CCR).

On that note, I think many moons ago when I first heard this song on the radio here and there, I though it was Paul McCartney and the Wings: Link

Confusing "Come And Get It" for a Beatles song is logical, since it was written by Paul McCartney, McCartney did a demo for the song, and Badfinger didn't change anything from the demo for their version. So, it really is a Beatles song without a Beatle on it.

Anyway, how anyone can confuse the songs in TFA, I don't know. Maybe Axel F. But the rest?

It must be like how Napster made everyone think every parody ever was performed by Weird Al.

I still think the Dave Mason version gives Jimmy a run for his money, plus Mason is on the Jimmy version

I don't claim to be a music guru, but with the exception of AxelF, who I never heard of, I knew all of those song's artists. Of course most of them are on one of my playlists.

But I do know that "Bette Davis Eyes" was really sung by Rod Stewart.

I had never heard this version before. It's interesting, but I don't think it tops Hendrix. It comes closer than I've ever heard though.

There's an 80's song (maybe late 70's) that I would absolutely swear was Roy Orbison but isn't.

And since I can't remember the title or artist I have just posted for nothing.

"The Dwarves are the Best Band Ever" is by The Dwarves, though.

So that's OK.

The great tradgedy of Bobby McFerrin is that the guy is a legitimate genus, but the only thing everyone knows about him is "Don't Worry, Be Happy." He won't even perform that song any more. I'll bet he's the guy trying to get people to think it's Marley.

Same goes for "Because The Night." Hell, I imagine most people 30 and under think it's a Natalie Merchant song and haven't heard (or don't differentiate) Patti Smith's version. How many realize that's Springsteen's song (or have heard his excellent live version)?

One that I expected in TFA: (Don't You) Forget About Me. A lot of people thought it was Billy Idol for no apparent reason. I think that's the reason he covered it on his Greatest Hits... what did he have to lose?

You'd be surprised how many people think "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" is an original Willie Nelson song (thats a Hank Sr song) also many many people think "Midnight Special" is an original CCR song(its a Lead Belly song)

Oh, and an ex of mine swore "Love Is Like Oxygen" was done by ELO. And it never sunk in, no matter how many times I told her it was written and performed by Sweet. So whenever someone would mention ELO in a random conversation, she'd blurt out "I love ELO!" and start singing Love Is Like Oxygen. She never understood why people looked at her strangely.

never heard 1 person say that. TFA sucked too. there are dozens of sound-alike songs from the 50's & 60's alone. fake Elvis's. one-hit wonders. re-makes of someone else's #1 cover hit. guys that sound like girls, and vice versa. fake Donovan's. beach/surf music alone is a easily confused genre. Cracked, you disappoint.

ps: Van Morrison...so over-rated. Steve Miller Band was okay, holy crap so over-rated i doubt he's paying for his own dinners to this day.

then you get great acts like J.Geils Band, The Tubes or Katrina & The Waves that don't make a dime until they put out some POS crap that takes off - and suddenly they're cursed and people think that bad pop hit is what they were all about. farking pathetic.

There's a difference between "people don't really realize that {X's} performance of {song} is actually a cover version, and {song} was originally by {Y}" and the point of the article, which is "people think the {X's} performance of {song} is actually {Y} performing it."

As Red Leader says, "stay on target..."

Billy was offered the song before it went to Simple Minds. In fact, The Fixx and Bryan Ferry also passed on it.

When napster first started, Jimi Hendrix - Kung Fu Fighting was a mp3 download worth of disappointment for many, everyone who knows anything knows Kung Fu Fighting was sang by Carl Douglas. Ah the things I would giggle about in high school and undergrad.
